Okay....
I think there is a similar thread on SS, but didn't bother to look since here (supposedly) people are free to say whatever they want. This drug dealer sponsored silly stunt shit is just that. Screw Subaru and their drug deal sponsored take-over of U.S. rally |

Well you ol' curmudgeon, I see we're in agreement. I think its such bullshit and like everything else Block has done it's an over produced, finely orchestrated, heavily edited entertainment piece in no way connected to any reality. I posted a well grounded, comparison to this sort of made up shit compared with some well done things like the award winning "Cloud Dance" with the truly great Ari Vatanen at Pikes Peak for a real production and REAL competition, and embedded some in car vids fron Toni Gardemeister just smoking fast in his personal rwd GpF car and said "Now there's real car control, no editing, just plain FAST with trees waiting." Its in the same carefully contructed bullshit hyped jump from one purpose built ramp to the other purpose built ramp, a 30 minute fluff job for 1,2 seconds of staged "action" and I pointed out how ridiculous his bullshit claim of "The longest car jump in the world" when plenty of people has beat his "record" in the middle of stages and then instead of jumping out of the car and acting the fool, the fuckin well floor it and FINISH THE FUCKIN STAGE. It would be one thing if he had any speed--more than enough to beat lowly garage built cars that everybody here have--- but as we've seen he struggles to complete 1-2 stages in WRC events without flipping or stuffing and then rarely is higher than the top of the bottom third Overall under "Super rally" rules, and an hour or more behind the winners. The main point is more wads of cash burned up to get people to look at him. What a need for attention the man must have. The thread was interesting on Turbobricks, predictably on the Merkur forums I got attacked as "negative" and really chewed out when i opined that Turbobricks had a much more varied, and in my opinion level headed response with many saying "Meh, pointless shenanigans" and "Give anybody enough tires and cars and a massive production budget and a short movie could be made making anything seem exciting. > > Screw Subaru and their drug deal sponsored > take-over of U.S. rally Jens, there's worse things that some stupid soda pop shit to worry about. I just want to say this is in no way trying to portray rally. Its gymkahna. Its a completly different driving sport. It mostly IS a stunt. Wow. What a concept. Someone doing something for fun and entertainment.
Why cant Ken Block have fun? Who CARES if he's rich and therefore can afford to go through tires. Are you really so lame that you have to try and knock him down for wanting to have fun? SERIOUSLY? Especially with that phrase you like to use "smiles per dollar" or whatever it is. So, the amount of fun you have by how much you spend. Block just spends a LOT more, and seems to have fun. WTF guys. Your bitching to be bitching at this point. His video isnt rally. They're not saying it is. Besides, Its not even a rally car, there's no roll cage in there. dude...that shit is so unreal...my mind was fully blown after seeing that the other day.
so i have one of those "drift box" things that has a gps and says your drift angle. basically what i have learned is that a 30 degree drift "feels" like a 90 degree drift and for me anyway, it is really hard to get past 40 degrees (on snow of course, i only have 90 hp). so my point is, to throw down a 80 degree drift at like 60 mph....you have to be a badass.... jeez....that video almost makes me want to bail on rally and just build a drift car.... |

The thing that ruins it for me are all the skid marks from previous attempts.
I mean look what Gigi galli can do DURING an event around a blind corner lined with people and cars, oh and only one chance to get it right, no retakes. If Ken is doing this just for fun, fine, but why put all the sponsor stickers on the car and make a big production video of it unless you want to say "look at me look at me." Reminds me of his "world record" jump, which just so happens to be about 17 feet shy of this: ![]() Which actually happened during a real rally, not a staged publicity stunt. Edited 1 time(s). way too much overanalyzing going on, sorry, but just seems to me like too many of you just gotta come up with some way to cut and stick it to ken
and way too much comparing to rally, what he did wasn't rally, it wasn't anything close to rally and as for the "retakes" did you notice all the different times that the camera was moved and placed at different spots on the car, that would be so we, the viewers, got to see multiple angles and shots, sorta like when a movie is made like it or don't like it, but I see no reason to knock the guy for going out, doing something he clearly enjoys, making a short film about it and putting it out there for others to enjoy if I had the cash, doing something like that over and over would be a fucking blast after all, even in autocross, it's not based on just one run, last time I ran, I got four stop being a bunch of bitter housewives |

OK so Gigi Galli nailed that turn!!
Ken Block's video is well turned out. Looks like a lot of WORK went into producing it. Fifty cents in a bet says that he laughed his ass off doing the driving it took to get all the takes. Sure looks like a great way to turn dollars into entertainment. I laughed myself silly. Many of you need to take a Chill-Ax and some deep breaths. Inhale.....Exhale.... Inhale......Exhale..... Not a one of you has less food on the table for Ken doing this..... Ken did not cause any damage to Subaru, to Rallying or anything else, except apparently to certain miserable fool's egos. Given the opportunity I'd sure sit in for Ken or Gigi. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

Get that VW of yours done.... Sure would be silly if it is a turbo-ed rear-driver when you bring it out. I need to raise some dough so that I can run some events next year. Carl, why not..? That video got over 1 million hits (between the two links) in the first 2.5 days it was up. I'm really not involved with this part of his racing, but I see a guy that is having fun with a pretty awesome toy and at the same time he's generating enormous exposure for his sponsors (which are stoked about that kind of exposure). If you had a bunch of high paying sponsors on your race car, wouldn't you want to create as much of positive exposure as you could for them? I read the youtube comments and 99% of them love the video. So, why not? I think there is a serious lack of understanding the all sponsorship concept in the US rally enviroment, due to the fact that it's always been an underground sport, without exposure and proper marketing planning, so people (competitors)have no idea how to deal with that. People like Ken, Travis, Tanner, ACP, DM, Pat have done a pretty amazing job at that in N.A. Rally and if I was an un-sponsored competitor I would follow very carefully what they are doing in order to attract corporate dollars on their race cars. www.alexgelsomino.com |
