Lack of heater I think is to a stuck thermostat (stuck open). The heater core is getting good coolant flow. Felt both the inlet and outlet when engine was warm and both were hot. I bought the car in March, never really tried out the heat until I was coming back from the early October national rallycross in Fowlerville when it was in the 40's or so at night. The heat temperature delta was a bit warmer, but not much. Was enough to keep me from freezing to death and get fog off the windshield, but wouldn't really heat the car.
After LSPR (and being cold on the night transits) I finally decided to look at the HVAC. Found out that the temperature control flap is some swiss cheese flap of metal with holes in it, and covered by some foam stuff to seal the holes. After 20 years, my foam wasn't there. A roll of duct tape later, I get the holes covered and flip the temp switch. HOT AIR!!! But then it went back to a more luke warm (but still warmer than before) air after a few seconds. I was confused, but said screw it and then went to the rallycross mentioned above. On the drive there, heat wasn't working perfect, and still pretty cold. However, after my buddy did his first runs on the course, I came to the car to swap in for my runs. The car was pumping out tons of heat! Pumped out so much I opened the door and felt a heat wave which was nice compared to the weather. So I can only think the thermostat is stuck open. That way when the engine is being worked hard, it will heat up the car. OR the airflow through the heater core isn't the greatest and the path of least resitance is somehow getting around the core, thus not heating the air the best way. OR the flow through the heater core could suck. It could be a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B or Column C as well. But all I know is that she makes hot hot heat under heavy load. So on stages I'll be fine, but I'll freeze my butt off on transits if I don't fix this. |

Mark...
I had been thinking about this very thought. My solution was simpler than that, although, I do not know how QUICKLY it would function. I have a three way fluid solenoid that was marketed as a line lock. It has three ports: normally open, normally closed, and common. (Kinda like a relay) Put a slave cylinder under the dash, pushing on the clutch pedal linkage. This, actually, looks similar to how Audi did it, but anyway... my thought had the slave vertical and pushing on, say, a 2" radius lever on the forward side of the clutch lever. Tee the slave inlet to "common". Tie the NC side to something high pressure. P/S system maybe. Doesn't need to be super high flow, -4 would be plenty. NO would dump to the return side of the system. Problem solved! IIRC clutch actuation is supposed to be 20-30lb max at the pedal. 6:1 linkage ratio makes 120-150lb of force on the pushrod. This is for OEM specs, aftermarket necessarily will be more, but not significantly so. I do not know where to get this style valve, this one was given to me. Temp gauge is cold when driving on the highway (left side of LED warning light) and when I was driving in LSPR it was going the highest I've ever seen it beyond the LED on the right. It does take a long as time to warm up too. I just gotta get around to doing this and fix it right. But lots of heat on stage is really all I need and I know the car will do that.

If anything it's dismay at the simple minded "OOOooooooh ain't it cool", with no further thought. It's as cool as a TV commercial. And I'm of the opinion that TV commercials are bullshit too. Again, it would be one thing if---BY ANY BROADER STANDARDS THAN HE BEATS A BUNCH OF PUTZES LIKE US------ Block could be imagined as fast. But sub 30s, sub 40th OA on Super-rally isn't too impressive. What do you do when your kite winds around a power line? Call the Kite Man! What about frogs? I like frogs. |
