My wife drove out to get a sled and ended up walking back. The research that I did on the tires indicated that they would be acceptable on the snow, but that did not seem to be the case.
I took the R32 out on the BFG gForce A/S tires to see how they worked. There is a video on the BFG web site of winter testing in Houghton, MI. They worked great in the video, but not in practice this morning. I had to leave the car at the bottom of the hill from my house. I carted my snow tires down the hill, installed them and could get up the hill like it was dry. |

Jay you driving the rally car or something else?
I have been to Bellevue in the wee dark hrs and found that um entertaining - I left work when I closed the office and made it back to N Seattle but it is still snowing hard here and the Subbie is running out of ground clearance. My new tires are still in a UPS truck somewhere in the Redmond Area... The OEM tires are not so good with 56K on them. In the long run reality always wins. |

Man. 4 inches in Seattle, you guys are fucked if you ever come to Colorado.
Two winters ago we got about 40 inches in a 14 hour period. Mark and I went out for about 6 hours on the scooters with a backpack of beer. I then got up the next morning, dug out my Saturn, then drove out onto I70, the only interstate open out of Colorado and drove to Salt Lake to pick up my then girlfriend who was stuck at the airport. We got 10 inches and -22 degrees this past Sunday alone. Grant Hughes |

rallycar is stuck..under a collapsed costco carport, and behind my trailer. I may try winching the trailer outta the way, and use the rallycar to plow the drive. We'll see, right now this is a nice stay at home vacation.

------------------------------------------------------- > Man. 4 inches in Seattle, you guys are fucked if > you ever come to Colorado. The problem isn't the depth of the snow. The problem is that many of the neighbors are built on glacially formed hills, so they are really steep. Plus, we don't snow like this often, so most people don't have snow tires or the experience driving in really slippy conditions. Plus, the forecast was changing hourly for the last week, so I bet some people didn't believe it. Most of the cities on the I-25 corridor in CO are relatively flat. How often does I-80 on the big climb between Laramie and Cheyenne get shut down? Fairly often when I was visiting Laramie. On this side of the Sound, it warmed a lot more than forecast yesterday (forecast said 31, I saw 40), so the snow from earlier in the week melted. It then froze when the temps dropped back down. Then the snow fell on top of it. Tricky to drive on even if you are good, particularly if your neighbor is built on steep hills. alan |

+1 what Alan said.
People from back east and the midwest love to call us pussies and say we're afraid of the snow and can't drive in it. Yeah, guess what, it's not that difficult when it's completely flat and and constantly groomed by snow plows and salt, etc. Colorado has real mountains but go east of the rockies and what they call mountains are just little hills here. I'm sorry, but one of my requirements for something to be called a mountain is permanent glaciers. If it's got trees growing on top of it, it's not a mountain. Mt. Washington? Bah! That's a ski hill. And don't tell me what great winter drivers people in the east are. I was in Toronto when a huge snow storm hit. Without the roads all plowed and groomed yet most of the people were hopeless! People spun out all over the place, jacknifed semis, it was mayhem. I wasn't having any problem in my box van (6 studded snow tires!) towing a trailer, I just had to weave my way through the obstacle course. I think the problem was in the city they're so used to the roads being constantly plowed and salted, etc. that nobody bothers with snow tires or something, and they can't drive on fresh fallen snow, I dunno. You see, they hve the infrastructure to take care of the roads and deal with all the snow. In western Washington it snows so infrequently (and usually doesn't last that long) that there just is hardly and snowplows and manpower to deal with. The highly travelled roads get sanded and maybe plowed but the neighborhoods and more rural areas don't get any attention at all. It warms up during the day a bit, the roads melt a little then it freezes into an ice rink over night. If it stays cold for a while then it sticks around and get gets polished into ice. Except everywhere you go there are hills. You can't take an alternative route to anywhere without dealing with hills. So yeah, 4 inches of snow can really mess things up around here. I went down to check on my shop today and was glad I did. A pipe broke and flooded the bathroom so I had to shut it off and clean that up. Would have been real bad if I had waited until the weekend. Once you got out of my neighborhood (which is on top of a hill) the roads were in pretty good shape. The freeway was bare and wet but you still had to deal with the morons driving on bare wet pavement with their chains on. Or the SUV's creeping along at 15mph. My V8 Quattro is almost boring with Hakkas on the front and Blizzaks on the rear. The only thing that makes it interesting is that the Blizzaks are really worn out. Step on the gas and it's like a RWD car. Yeehaw! I'm going to get a couple of new Hakkas for the rear since it looks like the snow is going to be around a while. |

Yeah, my friend Morgan told some guy to get out and drove his car for him to the top of the hill he was stuck on in Portland. It was a combination of slick and lack of experience.
Other people are the only thing that ever scare me in the snow. I just like to give people shit. ![]() Grant Hughes |

It was very aggravating to drive to and from work today. Mostly people drive much slower than is really necessary. Or are driving with chains everywhere, even bare wet pavement. There was nowhere I went today where you really needed chains on any car. There is more grip than they think when it is sanded. I was passing people all over the place. Then again, check out what happened today: http://www.komonews.com/news/36458659.html?video=YHI&t=a You think they gotta deal with shit like that in Denver or Minneapolis? Seattle's got some steep hills. |
