Just finished doing my calcs....

Having some of these shorter stages means the Volvo is going to go through a LOT less fuel then John is used to. smiling smiley

This is going a bit far from the original topic, but this IS Rally ANARCHY, right?

In my experience, ALL the different regions. However, for the most part, I don't think that it is arrogance. Instead, I think it is the experiences in the regions that lead to the oddities of each region and the regions' strong advocacy for their differences. That's just the way people are.

At least the CRS classes co-exist with the RA regional classes. FWIW, I have heard a similar "we do things the best" all over the place.

For starters, you can't get away from the argument for uniformity. Since Olympus, the only event on the RA national calendar that does not use the FTC-to-ATC timing system, it is probably obvious that RA would like Olympus to change timing systems. However, as an official for Olympus, I get lots of grief about the timing from competitors who rarely compete here.

The problem is that there are significant problems with all timing systems and, when those problems come up, someone is going to complain "why don't you use the XYZ timing system like they do in <insert the name of somewhere else>?"

Neither RA nor NRS lean on regional events to comply with anything other than basic safety rules. They don't dictate what timing system or score cards we use. Both organizations are very good about allowing local events to run with their own 'flavor'.

When an event requests to be part of a national series, bask in the glory so to speak, possibly gain income, positive exposure or any number of imagined benefits, that event should readily comply with the series way of doing business. If we ask competitors to come from back east , at a large expense, they should expect to deal with a familiar set of standards. Similar timing and scoring, similar route books, tech and reg, consistant notes and so on. As a poor example you certainly wouldn't expect NASCAR to allow a Sprint Cup race to be held on a right hand oval on one track with the pits on the outside.

Even in my flunky helper status I get complaints from national competitors on our timing system, I can't imagine how many complaints are fielded by people more involved than I am.

I personally don't give a rats ass if we do a national or not. It actually complicates my life to a degree when we do. However if we are going to do a national and invite the rest of the country to come play then we need to do the very best we can. Pride not arrogance. Do it right not just ok.

I'd have to say I'm in agreement there.

A few years ago the inbreds at the local dirt track decided to flip a coin at the start of the races and send the "bomber" cars clockwise some weekends. I heard they quit when one of the cars peeled the guardrail due to running into the overlap. But hey when you have a 3/8 mile track there is only so much you can do to entertain yourself.

Considering Mr.Lane makes a 5 mile stage about 60 miles long due to wheelspin.....

So I need to talk management (wife) into letting me do the Rally Moto because:

I have never ridden on dirt - ever
I have done doo wops a number of times starting in the 1980's
I know the stage roads fairly well esp Pico
I think I am a fast driver
I am sure the ambulance will fit a bike in the back for service duty.

Thus everything is ripe for disaster, I am looking all over craigslist for a dual sport bike of some sort that is cheap.

In the long run reality always wins.

Derek I will have enough room in the boxtruck to fit a dual sport and could stop in Seattle Friday on the way down. We will load it up through the side door.

Oh great, now we're getting into Bike Historic Classes... oh yeah and no 2-strokes, that would limit the historic bikes...
