Everything that applies to the XRTi really applies to the BMW as well. They are very similar. So search that here.

JVL makes good proper rally suspension. So search that here for pictures.

Really, anything over 6" of stroke is okay, and 8" is the pinnacle for the struts. I may get corrected by JVL, but screw him, he's out playing in the woods.

Frank:

FYI. Here's a reply I got from the folks above on the Bilstein E36 Suspension:

Wilson,

prices for the BMW E36 Bilstein suspensions are following

1. Bilstein 40 mm front with spring and topmount + rear Bilsteins Eur 1.443,-/kit
2. Bilstein 50 mm front with double springs and top mounts Eur 1.558,-/pair
3. reservoir with compression adjustment for the previous Eur 574,-/pair
4. rear coilovers with double springs and top mounts Eur 853,-/pair
5. reservoir with compression adjustment for the previous Eur 140,-/pair

E30 prices are the same except the extra cost from the knuckle. Used pair is about Eur 150,-.

All Bilsteins are with special settings made by us.
Delivery time 2-3 weeks from the order.
All prices in Euro excluding taxes and transport. ( No tax for U.S)

If you need further information please ask.

So with the new NASA rules why not put an LS1 in your BMW? I am sure the V8 would be lighter, smaller, and have a lower center of gravity than the BMW M3 motors. Oh, and they would make a lot more power.

I've been supplying Volvos, Toyotas, Merkurs and Golves with 9.3" travel Bilstein coilovers for 5-6 years now.
Seriously its like back to the 70s again.

s52 motors are listed at 308 lbs on the bimmerforums site that you linked to.

Still less than the LS1. I had thought the LS1 was a little lighter than that.

How about a 200 lb V8 with 400 hp at 10,000 RPMs?
http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1562068.htm

That's what's going in the Starlet...

I found it amazing and was tempting to get one for the 242, but then I saw that :

"The engine price varies depending on build details and scope of supply. The 2.8 Liter version (84mm bore vs. 81 stock) with ecu, injection system, oil pump, flywheel, starter and alternator is under $30k"

For that price, I'll find a nice ball bearing turbo and keep the rest for my house cashdown!

I can't figure out why they're using such horrible gearing.
It's a Powerball engine.

Re: rally future

you should see the shit they use in bicyles these days. They have inertia valves in forks that can tell the difference between a G-out and a roller and a square edge. My fork downhill forks legs are "improved" butted 7005 with TIN coatings and the fork has begin and end stroke reb. adjusters as well as regular Comp, reb, preload, several springs, oil height etc, several different crowns. $1200 retail,

I ll bet bilsteins's have come a long way since the B46-049's I ran on my buggies. i saw what you wrote about the motocross life. Thats really cool, I have always been a huge fan.. I have been fortunate to have my bicycle career during the "glory days" of the sport. I would have loved to take part in the moto-cross evolution as you did. I will have to waste a few hours on the phone with you some day..

How much sag do you hope for on a dirt car? (%) If you are running the correct spring, how much preload would you expect? just some thoughts, no hurry..

so the 50mm is the piston diameter and hence oil capacity increased? .. and double spring would be a progressive set-up? are these rebuildable? rubber at the ends?

As well as strength due to cross section.

That, or it is just to keep them from rattling. I suspect the former. winking smiley

are these rebuildable?

Absolutely, as well as customizable for damping.

> rubber at the ends?

Going solely on the pics, it looks like the fronts are rose (heim) jointed. I don't know about the rears. You may want to direct that question to Timo. You can get bearings for the both the top and bottoms for the rears aftermarket anyhow, although some bushing compliance is not necessarily a bad thing in a rally car.

Oh, and B46 size shocks are still great for rally.
