How difficult is Navigating?
February 06, 2009 11:11PM
I am thinking to try out Rally and maybe start navigating first.

What do the drivers want from a Navigator?

Any courses or other things to do first before I would "volunteer"?

Pay the entry, work on the car, bring booze to the shop, drive the tow rig (supply the tow rig even better), take blame for all mistakes by anyone, bring food and don't make mistakes checking into time controls.

Several people offer co-driving courses. Ask questions of other co-ds, most are willing to help before an event. Attend novice meetings at events even if you aren't racing yet.

I recommend navigating as a checkpointer first with someone who can teach you the basics. This way you can learn 'on the road' without worrying about the heat of the competition.

Make sure you are asking the right question James. Navigating is reading a map, relaying info and building a rythym.

Co-driving on the other hand includes navvy.... and **everything else** other than driving the car onstage.

There are a couple of good books out there too...

I hear it's bad form to puke inside the car whilst on stage.
I'd much rather be the loose nut behind the wheel than the victim in the silly seat.

Where are you located? I can always be counted on to site down with someone and give them co-driving 101. Helps if you buy the beer. winking smiley

About as far from you as possible and still able to be in North America smiling smiley

I live in Vancouver, B.C. Canada

Was thinking about picking up a car and driving this year but my spouse lost her job. This gives her a perception of poverty (instead of the reality that some others are unfortunately facing) but it is probably not the best year to start.

As I have all of my safety equipment, I thought I would try Co-Driving for a year or two. I have worked four rallies in the start / finish timing and have wanted to rally since university.

Just find a driver that's not psycho and codriving is not difficult at all. I've always had fun!

I've done TSDs as a driver and a navvie, then went and volunteered at a rally and worked time controls, and then found an awesome experienced co-driver (Dave Shindle) to give me an introduction.

I just competed in my first rally as a co-driver (Sandblast) and was really glad I had done all those activities first. I didn't feel overwhelmed at the event due to all that prep.

I did have trouble with the notes on stage (just keeping up and finding the right ryhthm ie. a 50 looks like this...a 250 looks like this at this speed, etc...).
