So I took a break from working on the house proper and have been doing some work in the garage.. I've finally gotten some real tools.. like a MIG box and air compressor that don't suck! The problem with the air compressor was where was I going to put the damn thing so that it wasn't going to take up floor space.. I had just finished redoing all my work benches, shelves etc a couple months earlier.. and the damn thing didn't fit under and I wasn't going to re-redo the work bench... so my solution..

The second picture shows that I can just pull it back and there's more hole underneith.. nothing spectacular, you're right. ![]() Gene, you're not the first person to ask the WTF will you do when it's full of water question. I put a drain in tied into the sewer, problem solved.. I even had the presense of mind to spend an extra bit to get a bell trap style drain so if I drop a small widget and it bounces towards the drain, it won't go down ![]() When your garage is as small as mine, you gots to be inventive (couldn't put the compressor in the basement, or outside in a hut) ![]() Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

You couldn't fit the air compressor under the workbench in the garage so you cut the floor out, installed a drain, made forms, poured new concrete and then built a steel platform to stand on just so you didn't have to move the workbench up the wall 6 inches???
U coulda taken that compressor and just hang that baby from the ceiling with burly nylon tie down straps and anchors held into the roof trusses by 4" lag screws? That would clear up floor space. Thats pretty insane... So was the pit there before the bench? Is the rest of that a plywood floor? You really modified it to suit then! That's a pretty tricky-dick setup there making use of every sq-in. Michael LeCompte Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 02/19/2009 05:12AM by pikespeakgtx. |
You got it Mike.
The workbench was already too high and I had just finished remaking it for the 3rd time in no more than 5 years. If I had raised it high enough to clear the air compressor, it would have been a workshelf! Also I've already taken up pretty much all the room above with selving that's being used. I didn't want to put the air compressor up there anyways because there is a room above the garage.. was afraid of vibrations going into the room, the thing eventualy coming down unanounced. Sure it was a bit of work.. but not as much as it seems, pretty easy really. I lowered my whole basement, that was a lot of work. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

It was really nothing.. maybe 2 1/2 days of actual work.. and that would be taking it easy. I've attached pics of work. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish Edited 1 time(s). It looks like the ceiling is open.
Why not attach vertical 2X4's to the joists or trusses, then attach 2x4's to the 8"x8"x16" blocks and build a shelving unit off that. It'll be easy to get multiple shelves in the sizes that you need (ie. tires), as well as getting the compressor elevated into an overhead position. Free up the floor space, get everything into the air. You'll have waaaay more room. Edited - for poor spelling Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/23/2009 11:31AM by Morten2. |
