Robert "the Service Nazi" and I was discussing his Golf and the things he's bent and fucked up, and comparing note to the Soooper Bitchin stuff he saw whn he was working on the VW works cars back when VW had works cars coming to Kenya for Safari.
We all know the rear beams are major suckage and we are working on an exchange beam idea, and I'll be doing one for our resident raving mad-mad Tom Buress---who's way faster than all you guys put together so if he doesn't kill it, you shouldn't. But Robert brought up sumpin I have often thought about and seen on my beloved Saabs on the other end: reinforcing the front knuckle. So I drug out my trusty VW Golf knuckle I have for a welding fixture and that looks like this: ![]() Now reinforcing is easy enough since we have our good man William Steel Solutions wielding his trusty light sabre, but I was pointing out the elk antler (oder auf Deutsch "Elch Gewei" ![]() Now Robert says all the Golves he's seen have the grosse faule "Elch Gewi" mounting for the calipers and I says "Oh yaH! Then what the fuck to I remember the figure 89mm between centers for the ears for, huh, huh!????" So the question is Boys, are all youse guys using knuckles with these hideous growths sticking out in the way???? Because what the hell you do when you want nicer calipers than those flexy boing-y thangs that are stock??? Further question is should we, the little collective pool of talent here, make some modded knuckles for you poor saps? Modded to allow nicer calipers and stronger? Please Carl Seidel, Eddie Forell, Billy elliot, TOM!, the rest of youse guys, whaddya think? (Do you think?)(Then why you in pokey VWs? neener neener!!!) VW already has a stock solution: the steering knuckles from a G60 Corrado. They have bolt holes where a caliper bracket attaches instead of an integrated bracket like the Golfs. I think the knuckles from the mk2 Jetta GLI with 10.1" brakes and the Corrado with 11" brakes are interchangeable, but I'm not sure.
I would snap some photos of the Corrado brakes on my car, but it's not in my garage right now, so a link to the German Auto Parts website will have to do for now: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Corrado/Suspension/241/1 The Corrado knuckles, 11" rotors, and calipers are a straightforward swap. You'll need Corrado brake lines (they're longer because the rotor swings in a bigger arc) and you may need to get the larger ball joints (not a bad thing). Also, You will now need 15" wheels to fit over your brakes... |

That'd be very cool, but frankly I'd rather have youse guys and Timm spending time on that rear beam project and on a mount for the OEM PS pump to get it up offa the ground.
If you can make it fit a 16v and maybe have a little rack'n'pinion tightening action like VW used for the alternators on the 8vs, that'd be groovy. Self-righteous douche canoe |

But the first question remains : Are all Gloves saddled with this knuckle? The Corrado thing is nice but are they common enough in the Spare Parts in Wating Depots commonly called "wrecking yards"?. And Erik, everything go together with your struts OK??? Piccies??? > John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Heres the best pic I have of the corrado g60/jetta 16v/some passats/mk3 4 cyl knuckle.
![]() They came on lots of stuff and are easy to find. They fit 10.1-11.3" rotors for stock setups. The knuckle you have does the 9.4" rotors. Oh, and john vanlandingham Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > our resident raving mad-mad Tom > Buress---who's way faster than all you guys put > together so if he doesn't kill it, you shouldn't. 11 inch set ups require 15 inch wheels. I am also for improving the rear beam and ps positioning which are common problems. Even the slow me bent a rear beam at my first event. I also never ran an event with ps so far. Either bent or lost the pulley or broke the resorvoir.

It's only if you replace the 10.1" rotor with an 11" and the caliper with the 2 piston Audi 5000/G60 setup that you need to go with 15" wheels. www.performanceoptions.net |

This is an upgrade that I was preaching years ago to any Golf runner I knew. Toss those shite 9.4" brakes and knuckles. Go to the pic-and-pull and grab the 10.1" set-up from a mk3 golf for cheap! The knuckles are waaaaaay beefier, the calipers are stronger, the brakes are bigger, I *think* the wheel bearings are bigger, I also seem to remember the ball joint is bigger as well. They fit under 14" wheels, and allow an easy upgrade to 11" brakes, if you want. They are so easy to come by and are so ridiculously much better that I can't understand why anybody running a golf would still have the craptastic 9.4" brake/knuckle junk on there.
