Annoying insurance and smog issues
April 14, 2009 07:49PM
Ok so to make a long story short my rally car and DD are both registered at my mom's address in Whatcom county WA, and not here where I live (Multnomah county, OR) because they rally car wont pass smog. They are both titled in my name, and insured by the same policy which is why the DD (which would pass smog) is also registered there.

So, I have a WA state drivers license and have never had a OR license. Well, now for reasons i wont get into, it looks like I need to get a OR license. When I do that, the cars will have to be registered in PDX because if i forfeit the WA license for a OR license, the insurance company is going to be like WTF mate?

ok, so here is the question: how the hell do you guys with rally cars that don't have an ODB plug register your cars in counties that smog? and please don't tell me they pass smog...haha

top two reasons to own a rally car 10 years old or newer:
-cheat the ODBII
-the community college body shop will work on it for free

There should not be any issue with cars being titled and licensed in Washington state regardless of what state your drivers license is issued in.

Correct.

I have many cars, some registered in King County, some in Thurston County. I have not have any issues with registrations.

I wouldn't worry, Oregon is still part of the USA and the insurance is valid all over the country, and should be in Canada too!

It is possible to have Washington registration and be living somewhere else, Washington will sell tabs for up to 18 months and will use an address in another state to mail renewal notice and tabs ... Some jobs require moving for several years for projects and such, the state recognises this and will try to accommodate, plus many folks are snow birds, etc.. Revenue is revenue and the state will take all it can get!

I have never had an insurance agent ask to look at my driver's license, though one agent asked for my license number and state of issue a long time ago when moving into a new area. They might want to look at your driving record if you are new to that insurer, which sort of implies that you have to have a driver's license, but I would not expect them to require having a license in that specific jusridiction for the reasons stated: people move. Have you looked at the fine print on your current policy?

Usually the bigger problem is the state your living in. Colorado requires you to switch your registration once you've resided in the state for 90 days. I've gotten around this in the past by putting my father's name on the registration and keeping it registered in Wyoming.

My GTX is registered as a 'historic' vehicle in Maryland at my parents address. I live in California.

The only pisser is my old man wouldn't put the rally car in his or my moms names cos he assumes I'll rob a bank or overthrow the government with it.

But it's ok for him to drive MY Trooper that I keep in Maryland for east coast trips anytime HE wants.

Cali is like Colorado where they require you to change your registration if you live there for 90 days. So it's likely the first time I get pulled over the gig is up.

My last 2 rally cars past NH smog checks. I know you told me not to tell you that, but it is true.

Yeah sorry, my GTX passes CA smog tests...at the stricter Test Only Stations. This year I even had to go find and recreate the entire EVAP charcoal canister system and plumbing that the previous owner in Canada removed.

My rally car would pass if the people knew how to drive manuals and weren't always five foot two mexican kids who can't reach the petals.

A tidbit that may guide you in checking this out from VA law:
- If you pay personal properly tax in another state on a car (which might be the case for the rally car in WA) and the vehicle is garaged in that other state, then VA law would say you would not have to register the car in VA, even if you live in VA.

You might find there is a similar law in OR, even though WA does not appear to asses personal property tax on privately owned cars.

Fuck thats true. At least it was cheap.

This one is as nice as it could possibly be for a Trooper. It's a pearl white/tan limited, has the worlds largest sunroof,4x4,leather and the works and cost me like 4 G's 3 years ago and it's only got 70K miles.

The engine is pretty worthless, but it's got a limited slip diff and for what I do with it which is drive it less than 1 month a year. It does the job and it's been hassle free.
