It is not uncommon to own things in many states, no one really cares. A lot of people, esp reitired people, have cars in sunny places and cars in less sunny places. At my last job the boss had a HI licecnce, cars licenced in WA, ID, HI, and NY. He also had homes in each of these places.

WA also waved the smog test on one car that he had in ID becuse he asked nicely if he could re do the tabs given the car was not in state at that time and would not likely return for a few years.

WA does not like OR plated cars for WA state drivers licence becuse of the sales tax thing but that is really the only issue I know of.

In the long run reality always wins.

thanks for the info.

mack73 - i don't believe your plan is legal per rally rules.

as for owning a car in one state, having a license in another etc: yeah when i worked at brammo, a lot of the atom owners kept their atoms in different states than their primary residence. i realize that is legal per the state, i just figured my insurance company would bust me because i did give them my WA license number when i got the policy. also, if i get a third vehicle registered to me in portland, i am thinking the insurance company will be like "WTF? why dont you register your other two cars there?" At that point though, i think it would be best to get a new insurance policy with a company that is less nosey.

Whatever you do, you need to convince yourself that it's legal and compliant with your insurance company.

As discussed in the AIG thread (I think it was there) the insurance companies are in the business of selling assurance but when push comes to shove, they'll look for whatever small miniscule reason to not pay out a claim.

Not good if you get into an accident and a third party get's hurt.

Why not contact a different insurance company in Oregon and simply ask them straight up. Ask them to substantiate their reasoning, if you get a negative response.

Why would that be? A trip permit allows the vehicle to be legally operated on public roads? Unless I'm remembering wrong, I don't think the rules explicitly list that the tabs have to be current?
