Actually Jay, you got the closest. Pretty damn close, actually, so I'll spill the beans since I'll probably never do it unless I win the lottery or something.

Porsche 944 with an Audi 4.2 liter V8.

Yes, the V8 will fit, they put Chevy small blocks in these all the time. The car is pretty much 50/50 weight distribution stock, so the extra weight of the aluminum V8 won't mess that up much.
-300 hp stock with the Audi V8.
-The 944 uses the Audi 016 transaxle which is pretty much bulletproof.
-Front suspension is basic struts and uses VW Rabbit lower control arms
-Rear suspension is torsion bars and trailing arms. Can be converted to coilovers easy and the upper shock mounts relocated upward for extra travel easily.
-Fuel tank is located above the tranny up out of the way and only hangs down in one spot, easy to protect. So no issues with mounting a fuel cell.
-Fiberglass and carbon body parts available for everything, including carbon dash and Lexan rear hatch window.
-Should weigh about 2600-2700 lbs in rally trim.
-Good brakes and several choices there, limited a bit when using 15" wheels.
-Wheelbase is only 94.5" but that's about the same as a Mk2 Ford Escort and those don't suck. Plus the 944 has about 50/50 weight distribution and is very well balanced.
-You can pick up 944's for as little as $500 easy. We have 2 here at the shop we picked up for that and both could be daily drivers. One has a bad oil leak and a crappy interior (so what for a rally car) and the other is actually kinda too nice to turn into a race car.

Does anyone know what happened to 944 West? It looks like they closed up.

How are the sight lines out of the 944? Is there room for someone of your height to sit upright in the things?

Way back in the day when my father was sort of on the VW of America rally team they talked about running a 944, a few did events such as HongKong to Peking if I recall.

As long as there is a lot more room then say a RX7 Turbo.

um...wrong. the only thing holding GTX's back are slow drivers. they are just as capable of winning as any Sube, and can be done cheaper than a GD.

a 944 would be a sweet rally car...

I work on these things every day and they are plenty roomy for me, considering it's a 2 seater sports car. Much better than a Gen. 2 RX-7, anyway. Not as much headroom as a Volvo, of course, but not really a problem for me at 6'5". Oh, and I never sit upright in ANY car... Visibility is good because there is lots of glass.

There was a guy in Quebec a few years ago that ran a 944 turbo. Snow rallies and everything!

1990-1993 Ford Festiva FWD

or

1995 Subaru Outback Sport RWD

the awe factor and surpise factor would outweigh any of those cars ya guys mentioned. most of them ya mentioned would be considered "historic" like...

ya need to think outside the box and come up with something different.

maybe an old Eagle Talon converted to RWD with individual throttle bodies??? now that is a true rally car. something that comes from your very own garage to beat the piss out of at top speed and top gear all the time.

yeah, i am definitely in the slow driver category, btw. next rally? I would love to make rally Idaho, everyone is going to be there and it would be great fun, but I don't think it is going to happen at this point. (competing anyway, i will probably go to crew or spectate). Other than that, I am shooting for PFR, if it is not the same weekend as Mt. Hood., Mt. Hood, Rally, and probably the kananaskis rally.

The car is with Obrain right now getting a whole lot done to it. Basically my plan is to "finish" it, or at least get it closer to what I would consider finished. Still need to get the bent front upright situation figured out. As well as hoard a bunch more spare parts.

Oh didn't know you bent a knuckle already. How'd you manage that? What sorts of stuff is Mason doing to it?

Why a no go on rally idaho? Is a money or time thing thats holding you up?

If you need a codriver or crew let me know, I'm pretty familiar with the platform.

um, wrong back at ya winking smiley

Jay is no slouch. I started off with Ross Foster in a GTX and Ross was very very fast. IIRC, you bought Matt's car. He was fast and smooth. It was hard to tell how fast he was. The engine started to die well before the end of the first stage (down on power on the straights) and we still had the 5th best time.

Once you start putting enough power into a GTX to take on a WRX, you start breaking gearboxes and there aren't a lot of whole gearboxes left. You can solve this with something like an XTrac, but that is crazy money (for a GTX).

The stage has to fairly technical for the GTX to have an advantage.

In Open, around the PNW, you compete against Cavett, Hintz, Eklund, Mager, all very fast, so you wouldn't have the lame driver in a fast car advantage. In PGT, you compete against against Goodwin (who should be fast again when he gets used to driving again) and Tabor (who has gotten fast),
