Another way to go with the powerplant that I forgot to mention is an Audi 5 cylinder 20 valve turbo motor. There is enough room in the engine bay of the 944 to fit it and 300 plus HP is easy to do with one of those. Plus how cool would THAT sound in a 944? You would spend as much as either of those choices just doing a performance rebuild on the Porsche 2.5 liter and still only have 150hp, which is why I'm not really considering that option. If you wanted to go Group 2 you could bump the compression up and do a little head work and a lumpier cam and have 180-190hp at the wheels but you could easily spend over $5000 doing that. Even 944 motors are expensive, after all it does still say Porsche on the cam cover. |

Well that's something to stick in the "what my next rallycar's gonna be" file.
And since this thread has already gone schizophrenic, I might as well comment more on the GTX. Yes, they handle. Yes, they can get down a stage in a hurry. We (just barely) managed to join the sub-7-minutes-on Brooklyn club in one. The trick is to get that car to go down several stages in a row in a hurry; but it seems like that car is its own worst enemy... I mean just look at those so-called "wheelbearings". That said, I think every proper rally driver oughtta own one at some point in their carreer. It's like what Jeremy Clarkson says about Alfas, that you can't be a real authentic gearhead without at least one of those little darlings in your background, the car will teach you and test you...in some sick sorta S&M way. Even though I'm driving basically a somewhat improved version of the same damn car, I still miss my poor ol' POS... much the way so many kidnap victims end up feeling sympathy for thier captors. Actually, the one at our shop you could have for $500 is in better shape. |

Sure, I will never be able to beat those guys. But even if i had a bad ass GD, i still wouldn't beat them. Now if any of those guys were in my GTX and I was in their GD impreza, I am sure they would still kick my ass on stage. Point being, a good driver (not me) can throw down in any car, and a GD shell isn't a requirement for PNW Open class top 5 stage times. Michael, if money wasn't an issue, i would be doing every rally in North America! haha, ok, seriously though...i think Idaho might be a little tight for me to make. Have a week long trip to Germany coming up in a few weeks, I have to put Obrain's daughter through college, and support Jay's sickening addiction. It would be fun though, and if it can happen it will happen. My plan has kind of changed lately and I would like to focus on getting the car really well sorted and tested thoroughly before I spend too much more entry fee money on limping my car on stage like I did at Doo Wops. Hopefully after everything comes together over the summer I can get back to the business of lots of rallies in the 2010 season. Obrain isn't doing anything too drastic to the car, just a bunch of little stuff that will all add up to a much better package. I will have to give some updates when we get some work done... wow, this RWD thread turned into the GTX owners blog... |

Hey pal, looookit.
I been here 2 years, never once anymore than a whisper talk about GTX's. Now we got piccies and people postin' and I don't care what kinda thread it is. Plus JVL is mia, we're flying under the radar. Understand? I started this thread...Now put up or shutup. ![]() Back to the love fest!! Michael LeCompte |

Let us now discuss just how perfectly that Bettie Page pic encapsulates the GTX ownership dynamic.
Wait. It pretty much sums up rallying in general, does it not? It's gonna hurt, it's gonna be expensive, it's high maintenence, you might get humiliated, you'll prolly get dirty, and you're gonna get involved anyway... JVL is working on: Ian Toppings Volvo bellhousing and clutch, carbs and headers; Pat Darrows RX7 brake caliper adaptors to Volvo; Kevin Turner's Subaru struts Dave Bower's Starion struts; Tom Burress' Vw Golf Struts and shocks Pat Mc Fayden's Golf struts and shocks Shawn Mangan's Xratty struts and shocks Ferenc's Cosworth head parts and rod and main order Servicing Audi struts back for better bronze bushings and shortening. Also been helping Jay Woodward with the Celica All-Trac trans that William Timmins picked up for Tim Taylor down in the Bay Area. That has been amongst other things, looking up manuals and specs, and when he was here to pick up one of the 2 stored here, dragging Jay over to Robert Gobright "Rallymech" where we immediately stripped the first box down for exam, then the second a few days later, and last night about 5 made a homemade extra deep socket by chopping a 36mm impact socket on the lathe, giving it a step and a bevel to fit in some thick water pipe for alignment---Robert will weld it and presto we have a BIG DEEP 36 socket for re-assembly JUST finished like a week/ 10 days ago Erik Chritiansens Golf front suspension And Colin Bombara's Subaru stuff not long before that And just shipped 2 Volvo motor with big nasty build Normal aspirated for Ian in Michigan And Gawd knows what else. And of course been busy reading what a horrible guy I am and how unrepentant evil and useless I am and how unresponsive to customer desires from shit 4-9 years ago. I see for example Timmy bringing up that I welded the so called clampy things in the wrong place where they can interfere with the anti-sway bar but no indication he wants to do anything about it oh for example, bring the fucking knuckles down so i can reposition them, Ooooooooooh nooooooo, heaven fuckin for fuckin bid that anybody would follow thru on that which I told him years ago, far better to act the victim and whine "you did........" > > Back to the love fest!!
