Tube notcher. Suggestions?
May 04, 2009 11:33AM
My cheap Harbor freight notcher is about shot, and it was never very good at its task.
Any inexpensive ones out there that someone has had good results with? I probably will step up to the plate and toss some dosh at it this time. Last one I bought was just for the one cage, and I'm into it for 3 so far...

Nahh, Fab-tec and G2 said they had some really sweet compound notcher that could do more than a 60 degree angle... I guess I should ask him.

Come on by and see the heard of Imps One is leaving for Canada this weekend...

Well the Soooooper bitchenest deal I ever saw was putting the notcher on the tool post on a lathe.
That meant you could to the angle in two planes, up and down with the notchr base and second angle with the top part of the cross-head.
The problem often crops up on say backstays where the have to angle down to the shock tower AND angle somewhat inwards too..

As for greater than 60*, most people just fake it some with an angle grinder, and custom trim it.

I really like the abrasive type of notcher like this:

http://www.lscmetalfab.com/document.asp?did=203

It's hard to justify the space and money unless you're going pro.

Instead I use a knee mill with some of these Paragon hole saw arbors and an angle vice.

I work with a guy who has built two tube frame airplanes. He uses his lathe to notch the tubes.

Alan,

When is a good time to stop by?

Robert,
Any time is fine, just call first. I only live 9 blocks from the shop...

I may try the drill press method. I have an extra one I can dedicate...

Anyone tried the Williams notcher?

http://www.lowbucktools.com/notcher.html

I've heard plenty of complaints about the pain involved in dealing with the holesaw style units and wondered if this one was worth the $$$.

Cheers, Ted

I used to own one and they suck...it's fast but the notch quality isn't there. The copes need so much grinding to make right that you're better off just using a grinder from the start.

These are the original, I have used the basic steel with great results. Come on, you know you want to buy American.

Mike Hooper says the same thing about his 'Ole Joint Jigger. Use a grinder.
