Robert,
I discussed the "Monte Carlo" addition with both RA and NRS last year. RAs insurance doesn't allow this type of event(TSD) as they also don't sanction RallyX. NRS has a wider range of events that can be sanctioned. The dual event can be done safely and sanctioned. Specifically I think the route should be a bit different. The TSD portion should be kept from comparing times to the rally portion. This should eliminate some of the urge to go fast to see how the TSD guys may stack up to real rally cars. This would require only adding or moving checkpoints a bit. Honestly on our PNW roads I'd personally rather see TSD added to an event over bikes. Bottom line is to provide a safe, fun event. John, Keith offers a real and valuable view to the discussion. Please take the time and listen to him. Not everyone is going to have the same thoughts, perspectives or even think of the same problems. If Robert is to be able to make good decisions he needs good input. If ocal competitors aren't going to be listened to then the thread should be stopped and Robert can just 'wing it'. I agree completely with his views on HNRs, rollovers and head ons. But that is a different discussion. So please for now stop the keyboard feuding. I'll see you clowns in the morning sometime. |

The 70's promoted drug use? What is that crap on the side of the front running Vermont Sports car Subaru cars, pixie dust? What's wrong with mustaches? Camaros were ugly? If Camaros were ugly, then the late model Subaus are hideous. Pet Rocks? Okay, I'll give you that one. Crap is crap. Suckers still buy crap. Look at all the Subarus in rally these days. YMCA was nuthin' compared to that damn disco. DISCO SUCKS!!! But, not as bad as that ghetto rap crap: "We gonna rape you, ho" Boom Boom Boom "We gonna cap you in da ass, yo" Boom Boom Boom "We can't sing, so we call it rap" Boom Boom Boom Sheesh..... I think that I get the point that several of you are trying to make. When I run a TSD I am trying to do well. I always try to hold the CAST. I think that you guys are trying to tell me that not everyone is as interested in doing well as I am and will go as fast as they can? That possibility exists at every TSD event. My experience is that just about everyone is trying to compete. I have only had one experience with a guy how was clearly being an idiot. He was so far behind me that I did not notice until after the event. I would have asked the rally master to exclude him on the spot.
Should I not trust the competitors to at least try to do well and hold their speeds. Robert. Robert. "You are way too normal to be on Rally Anarchy." Eddie Fiorelli. |

Hello Folks,
I think this is my first post here, even though I've been lurking for years! I ran for two seasons in the Ontario circuit, then moved West, left the car behind, then moved East, passed over the car... Hoping in the next year or so to get back in. Anyway. THIS IS THE TYPE OF EVENT I HOPED FOR! When I started out, much to my chagrin, I ended up driving back to central service stop and sitting between stages (and we pretty much ran as a driver/co-driver team generally without any crew); sometimes longer while the National folks got to play (although as the events went on I had a lot of work to do on the falling apart Justy!). In some ways this element of the sport was the detractor, I had hoped to some extent the fun would be in the endurance, and few of the events offered that. Defi was probably the best event for endurance, followed by Pines. No as I look to possibly get back in, I would love an event where I could go 9/10ths for hours instead of 11/10ths for minutes. I could build a car for that, with limited equipment, and truth be told what we save on car building could go into the H&N, etc. if needed. And as one of the generation who missed the good’ol days, but wishes I was old enough to be there, a true endurance event would let me think I was out in the woods in t-shirt at 3:00 am! I admit I don’t have enough experience in the sport to suggest how you would organize this event. However, if it was on my side of the continent I would do what I could to get there, far more enthusiastically then I would to go run for 40 minutes after having towed for 4hrs. Targa currently has a strong attraction, at least the type of event; the entry fee, the posh, the wine and dine, does not. Make a Targa with limited stops, long stages, and a class that lets a caged street car (with a HANS if need be) running without a service crew be able to compete, and I’ll bet you would have a huge turn-out Keep up the thinking and planning, and maybe this could turn the sport on its head! Matt Follett, P1 Justy, (it was more fun with P1!) |

Keep in mind the current TSD crowd likely knows the "rules" nad play the game as it is intended. However if we are looking at a TSD format to bring new people into stage rally then we'll be drawing in new 'customers'. More people with Subes or Evos or even old Volvos and know of John Lane. If you spend much time on the internet you will have seen the complaints over the squirrely kids on NASIOC and other forums. At Taholah this year we saw the lead car in a caravan of Maszda 3s getting acquainted with the local constabulary.
A few years ago I had the privelage of working this event http://www.salem-news.com/articles/august072006/ferrari_bust_8706.php I was working the speed controls mid route. They knew I was onstage and still we ended up with police choppers and mass squad cars involved. Made several TV stations. Yes they had money and seriously fast cars but they were some of the nicest people I've ever met at a motorsport activity. When you are dealing with new competitors stuff just happens. Keep in mind we've also had issues with the sweeps and advance (nationwide) comparing times to real competitors. It's just hard not to. |

Matt,
Welcome aboard! Have you ever driven a TSD event? I ask because of your 9/10ths comment. See also the 9/10ths thread. Depending on your definition of 9/10ths, your experience level and car prep level you MAY be going slower that you think. I agree with you about Targa. I like everything about it except the wine and cheese b.s. Gene, The run order should be: bikes, novices, TSD cars then stage cars. One minute separation between competitors, five minutes between classes. The event train will be longer but that is the price you pay. There will have to be hidden controls in each stage just like in a normal TSD. In fact I should stress that this concept will be structured more like a TSD than a stage rally. On the closed road sections the penalties will be very high for being early and very low for being late. The open road transit sections will be on a regular TSD format. One point for every second early or late. I am thinking about floating pause times for service opportunities. I don't want people speeding to catch up after a service stop. Robert. Robert. Yeah, I know. Well, you've probably noticed that while a few Xtreme Mustacher's have made it to the big time tv, most us little guys who have to trim our mustaches ourselves and buy our own grooming equipment have been hit pretty hard. I never got into this for fame and fortune, mustache rides were always about the fun (and I'll admit it: the competition). Sure, the adventure, going places you haven't been before, and the enjoyment you get out of building your technique were all a part of it... plus the adrenaline rush after you get yourself out of a particularly hairy situation! But it's still about the fun and all the great people you meet.
