Awesome pics John. Love the 242s. Miss my flathood.

Do you think the suspension looks a little too soft in the rear of most of the pictures? Not being a smart ass, a real question.

And John, what is the lug # and size of the most common volvo hubs? I have some 5x100 compomotive wheels from my Subie - wonder if they'll fit a Volvo.

Is it that ugly? Just a 340. made in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in what was the DAF factory

A bunch of engines including the Volvo "Redblock" B19 and B200, transaxle in back for near perfect 50/50 weight balance.

No overhang to whack into trees with.

Alright, this may be a stupid question, but bear with me.

What was it about the MkII Escort that made it so great? I know Ford had huge successes with it in the 70's, particularly with the Rothmann cars. Since we can't (easily) get them here though, I wonder how it stacks up against a 510, which we CAN get.

I've co-driven in a MkII, but didn't really get a chance to inspect it. Seems like they have similar layouts (macpherson front, leaf-sprung live-axle rear) and similar wheelbases (2408mmm for the Escort, 2421mm for the 510).

It looks like by the time the MkII Escort came out, Datsun had stopped using the 510 and moved on to the Z and the 710, so maybe they just stacked up against each other with equivalently-backed resources. However there still seems to be a big following of the Escort in Europe and not so much for the 510. It's got me wondering.

So maybe its the driving, but those pictures in no way inspire me to own a volvo as a rally car. All I see is un controlled over steer, lots of bent suspension parts and body work. All it would take is one rock in any of those ditches to end your rally and/or destroy the car.

I am also interested in the answer to Michel question about what makes the MkII escort so popular over other similar rear wheel drive platforms.

Andrew, I couldn't agree more. Every one of those pictures is "Exciting" only because they are all at least 3ft off-line with lots of opposite lock. If they were on the right line at the right speed they would look far more boring but be faster.

That's what I answered above with the red hatch and asked "Is it really that ugly?"

It does appear they set them up soft in the back but considering that even 15 years ago most 240s were making around 230 bhp its pretty clear to me they're looking to use squat to get grip. They can (and must) do this because they have relatively long rear travel so just like we figured out about 31 years ago when we got to 300-320mm rear travel on moto-cross bikes, we were much faster when we softened the WHEEL rate and used the long travel not for smacking into bumps alone, but by allowing the suspension to follow and comply to bumps both on the uphill side and the downhill side of bumps..

Knowing the shock they use I'd say the Volvos are at about 8.5"-9" travel in the rear.

You'll see even softer set-ups in winter events where there a bit less grip.

By the way, the correctness of the long travel/softer wheel rate is shown in the set up charts for the 2wd vs 4wd Ford Sierras whewre the rwd calls for 175ish rear springs and the same car in 4wd form calls for 195ish lb/in. In that case I say they also don't want weight coming OFF the front wheels which are also driving and seeing 50% of the power (in the works cars)(different torque split vs road cars or GpN which is 1/3 front-2/3 rear split)

Finally you've see the relative softness of all the 'World Rally Cars" where the shells and wheelhousings and arches are all redone to accomodate their LONG Travel---gawd knows how long but it looks like about 1 foot of travel.
The "average " position of the suspension is more oor less as always, just way more droop and way more bump.

Josh, from what I've seen when I was last there at an event in the mid 90s the competition is so close and so intense and the total SS miles so short that there is a "vinna eller försvinna" (win or disappear) attitude.
This drives the nuts motors and dog boxes and the very short gearing that so many cough up for there.

They push HARD, much MUCH harder than I have ever seen any domestic drivers push and when there's that much depth licking at your heels you push deeper and when you do that, you get off line.

Imagine how you'd be pushing if there were maybe 45-60 guys in your class about as quick and with buckets more torque that you have in your Golf. Lets say you were an "A" driver--just saying. You'd know that maybe the top 1/3 of the B drivers are capable of mixing it in the top of the A drivers, so that's another 15-25 guys PUSHING far far harder than anything we've seen here.

So you push, mistakes happen.

And you have to push HARD.

I miss the old rally sprint we used to have in Quebec! It was so short you had to go 100% from start to finish! I was not very good because I always slow start since I don't have enough practice, but it made for interesting battles!

Rallycross is no where near as much fun as being in the woods beating the shit out of the car!

That being said, I need to get my Volvo ready... Maybe I should try to get fired from my job so I have time to work on it?
