And you thought you went to senior prom in a cool car?
July 22, 2009 11:32PM
Yes, this is the old Volvo 164E I keep talking about, pulling out of the driveway and into the annals of history. 6 cylinders of pure inline fury!

Senior prom, which would end with me not only breaking my tuxedo pants (rented tuxes have plastic latches instead of buttons for some crazy reason), but also dropping a orange wedge into a bowl of teriaki sauce and all over my white shirt.

Being in Sacramento and all, I had a 200 watt amp and two full size house speakers with 12"s in the trunk for that Beastie Boys bass.

Oh to be 17 again....and dig those seat covers!!! Some guy at school had a 1969 BMW 1600 (like a 2002 but smaller), but I think I still had the cooler car.

Well, at the time of my senior prom I was driving a '59 Mercedes 190D, but it blew a glowplug the day before so I borrowed the "good" car - a '73 Volvo 142.

My Mercedes wasn't exactly "cool" around school. More "notorious". It'd blow glowplugs on a regular basis and they were wired in series so that if one went out, none of them worked. So I kept a screwdriver around to bypass the dead one and then would crank it until it fired on the three hot cylinders. It'd chug along belching out smoke from the exhaust and then after a few minutes the fourth would start to fire. Eventually it'd catch and then VROOOM, it'd spew out a last huge gob and be running. I'm not just talking puffs of smoke either. I'm talking a seriously huge dense cloud completely obscuring the parking lot.

It never left me stranded though.

It had a genuine Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW punch-button radio, wired to a single speaker in the dash and a tube amp that took several minutes to warm up. If you were climbing a hill, the engine got so loud you couldn't hear the tunes anyway.

66 Corvair. But didn't go to prom. Too shy. Or maybe no girls liked my 66 Corvair.

I had a 65 Corvair after high school, I loved that car.

However, for prom, I didn't have my license yet, so my date (friend, he had a g/f, sucky) drove my little 1964 Datsun sport truck (the unibody style) and it died on the way

so my friend's mom loaned us her big scary american something ugly

when my parents found out about that, they came to prom and traded the big ugly green beastly thing for my uncles purple Datsun 260Z

so, one seriously cool looking pickup to start off with, one very ugly monstrosity to arrive, and left in a very fast very pretty sportscar

however prom was boring, my date, his g/f's date (they'd broken up, got different dates, then gotten back together but kept their original prom dates, weird) and me hung out all night and totally ignored her, it was weird

and then dancing afterwards at the local gay all ages club (they always play the best music) and gave our friends a ride home, so 5 people in a Z, 3 of them on LSD

We hung out in the parking lot and played music and skateboarded and drank beer during prom. I had an 81 Subaru with no starter so I always had to strategically park so I could push start it.
Then when I was 20 I went to real prom with my girlfriend who was 18 and a senior at the time. 4 of us loaded into a CRX. Really hammered and I poured a beer into the front seat of this douchebag's BMW convertible. That's most of what I remember.

I went to prom in a 82 Aries K car!

I parked it accross the street so nobody would see me driving it!

Was the most boring night ever... a friend and I went away from the main room to smoke and drink by ourselves!

The after prom party was really nice though!

1981 Corvette painted fly-yellow with mirrored T-tops. Worse car I've ever owned.

Went to a Vocational high school in Nevada. We didn't have no stinking prom... I was driving a 1965 Chevy II at the time with a stroked 350, 4spd, posi rear. I was in the aircraft mechanics program, so I hand built a complete floor, sill to sill and all riveted together aircraft style for my Senior project.

Oh, And I love the Corvairs, have owned 5 or 6, and currently, my wife daily drives a 65 throughout the summer. Built it 5 years ago, flattened a early beetle sliding rag top, and welded it into a HUGE hole I cut into the roof. It opens from 6 inches behind the windshield, and stacks up on the rear window...

94 4runner then a party bus (which is vastly ironic as non of us in that group drank, hahaha) and then the 4 runner by itself for the 2nd one.

And they both werent that great. I had two shots at a decent one, and they both were so so, haha

Sounds cool! I still have 3 of them at my parents' place. 2 Corsas and a 110 put out to pasture. Pop has a nice early convertible that he tools around in in the summer.

A friend's got a '65 Corvair with the turbo. The intake manifold looks a lot like my towel rack.

so, what we've found out is that there are a lot of corvair fans (and owners, and former owners) on here

oh, and since I found pics, the little white truck was the one that we started out with

the corvair I used to have, it's was the car that inspired my 12XALT plates (which are on my protege5 now) and is where I got my screen name

my truck? must be since I'm the only one who posted a truck

1963/1964 Datsun NL320 sports truck, they only brought about 1000 of the unibody style into the states between 63-65

a camaro hit the white one, the red one got a bigger motor and 5 speed tranny and all sorts of other goodies and I even autocrossed it a few times (my mom still has it, but it needs some bodywork and engine, etc)
