I can't think of anything relevant about this story any more, other than the expeirence of rallying's emotional roller coaster, but relevant or not, I found a new home for the story. Enjoy.

Good writing, Dave.

What happened to the 3?

What event was that at Dave?
I'll be in Long Beach next week and weekend if you want to grab a beer or anything...

It was Rim 06 or 05. The WRX in the story (and the last picture), is my car, but with the previous owner, Neil Bliss.

Small world. Great article...I was looking at the picture like...'that Subaru looks really familiar!'

Small world indeed! It was Rim '06. I ran Gorman ridge that year too, and haven't run a damn thing since (other than 6 LeMons races). Very sad...

Turns out the car wouldn't start at that gas station because I forgot one wire when I was re-wiring the car. There is one wire that tells the ECU you're trying to start and not just running at 250 rpm. Only with a signal from this wire does it go rich and retarded enough to start easily.

The Mazda3 G2 car is a victim of a vast, worldwide conspiracy to keep me from rallying.

First, there were some policy changes at work that dried up my source of free used parts.

Second, there was a global economic calamity that ended with me selling my garage majal and moving into a small apartment with my girlfriend who is now unemployed.

Third, my "build it and they will come" mentality (or, more specifically, build it, and they will figure out how to get Rim of the World and Gorman Ridge back into the national forest) turned out to be overly optimistic. Or perhaps it was just the fact that I didn't hold up my part of the bargain. Maybe if I finish building it, rally will return to Southern California...

Fourth, did I mention I work for a car company? Yikes!

And, finally, I realized I'm getting just enough of my jollies running 24 Hours of LeMons (and soon Chump Car) that maybe I can survive a couple of years without dirt.

So the car is sitting, half started, in a parking place I rent for $50/month so I don't have to make the painful decision to get rid of it. Sucks...

thanks guys, glad you like it. If you have a minute, do me a favor and post some comments on the story. It will help give the illusion that there is a reasonably-sized audience for rally content.

Yes, I'm familiar with those.

I've learned that the hardest company to get help from is the one you're working for. "If we help you, then we have to help every bicycle racer and snowboarder out on the floor who wants a little help from...yadda yadda yadda."

I vaguely remember the global economic calamity. Sorry to hear that.

Idaho ain't THAT far... We had a GREAT time out there with the CRS crew.

Yeah, I got shown the door. Best thing that's happened to me in the last several years!

That's cool.

Well, I wish you luck with it. Glad it's not being crushed or started with liquid glass instead of oil or anything to get a clunkers rebate.

The 510 is sitting on the street outside my apartment. It's been dodging street sweepers for 4 years now. In fact, even when I ran Rim and Gorman in 2006, it spent the rest of its time sitting on the street. Poor thing even got tagged once (with pink spray paint.)

I'm half-assedly trying to sell it ($3,000), but I have too much of an irrational attachment to my rally machinery.

hmmmmmmmmmm.

I don't suppose you'd be interested in renting it out for Gorman? I'd like to help the Hockers out with entries. I'm not looking to compete hardcore, just go out and screw around and have some fun.
