I never thought of the VW fox as being a long car.. but not that I think about it.. it is. Looks like a super straight forward shorten.. also looks like a good job. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

The Audi Fox was a different car and larger. But I'm one of the guys who thought Chevetts were different in the US also.... |

The VW fox was a NA-only car, I think.
Longitudinal fwd thing. Never as fun as a rabbit or golf. I think it was around much later than the audi fox. Late 80s-early 90s for the vw fox. Also available in a 2 door wagon. There is one around here (2 door wagon) that the kid cut the roof off of (just the roof, left the pillars and windows) so that he can park his dirt bike in the back. |

VW Fox apparently came from VW Brasil.. go figure. The Audi Fox is completely different, but surprisingly similar in looks. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one in real life.. I bet the neighbourhood loves that dirt bike hauler ![]() Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

The Krautski Fox vs the Brazillian were update sheetmetal and uprated engines to the corporate 1,8 but otherwise similar and they were sold as a "cheaper" alternative to the Golf/Jetta---except adding fancy stuff to the Fox made the differnece sometimes 75 buckskis and few people were out foxed by such clever marketing. All I know is the Fox OEM top radiator hose works in Saab V4 when I install the bigger 99 sized radiators. Works soooooper bitchin. Had an acquaintance that worked in a local parts store. Told me about a stupid lady coming in for a part for her VW Fox. He said you mean Audi Fox. She said VW Fox. He proceded to tell her there was no such thing, she didn't know what she was talking about and ran her off...I had tears laughing at him. I asked him if he even bothered to look in the catalog..nope , he knew there was no such thing...hope she didn't have a 300 lb ex-Marine hubby..

The VW Fox is kind of a half breed of the VWAG B2 chassis. (Audi Coupe GT, quattro, 4000(80), VW Quantum(Passat)) Nothing quite swaps over but a lot of things almost do. It's a little smaller in some ways. My favorite is how they put a restrictor in the exhaust manifold so that the engine wouldn't make as much power as a base Golf... or Audi 4000. I'm told that the final year or two had an actual FIVE speed transaxle available, but I've never seen one.
The Audi Fox is a B1 chassis, same as the Dasher. For some reason I am thinking that they cribbed the design of it from NSU when Audi acquired them. According to this guy, a lot of B2 stuff bolts in. I'm pretty sure Fox 5 speeds are around in Canada.. I was considering buying one at one point.. Apparently the wheel bearings are complete garbage. I figured it had a lot of dasher in it ![]() That's kind of funny that they put a restrictor in the exhaust, doesn't really surprise me tho. Are you thinking it's based on the NSU RO80?? I am not sure. I recall hearing somewhere that part of/most of the reason they acquired NSU was so they could get some watercooled cars on the market ASAP since the aircooled models were turning into a huge bust.
But I think that was the K70, not the Fox. Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. |
