Body dropping/channeling and rules
July 30, 2009 08:25PM
Does anyone know the skinny on the legality of doing a reasonable body drop?

I'm just curious. As far as I know it's legit, you can't move a firewall but you can shorten it, no?

Cheers,

If it's against the rules, it should be allowed under an "awesome" exception.

Noticed last weekend that I can drop the body on the NSU around an 1 1/4" fairly easily... which if I do will be primarily for aesthetics and because it will keep me busy and not cost a lot.

Just wondering if I ever wanted to race that chassis if it would make it illegal.

So does it have an actual frame or unibody? Personally I wouldn't have an issue with in in principal, the quality of the work being a factor. No different than rebuilding a wrecked car, adding 1/4 panels, roofs and so on.

Next time you order a steak at a restaurant and they ask you how you want it cooked, tell 'em, "Medium Awesome." The reactions can be pretty freakin hilarous.

Christian, I just saw your boy Travis fall on his butt pretty freakin hard.
You guys still good to go for sunday?

Depends on the rules of the sanctioning body you want to race it under, I guess.
The Cadillacs raced in Speed World Challenge had 6 or so inches sectioned right out of the middle of the body. Same for the Mustangs. Though that's a gray area at best and fairly controversial.

That's a chop and section job isn't it?

Looks awesome.

I was going over the idea with a friend of mine last night and I think I'll do it. It's relatively easy and straight forward and neither of us can really find a downside.. Sectioning or chopping it would be a nightmare though.

It's just sheet metal , the tricky part is getting glass cut if you do the windows. It is pretty common here to chop and channel cars, at least street rods and pickup trucks. I know several guys who do it in their garages with little suitcase wirefeeds. Not pros, just normal folks like us...well maybe a bit more normal...

Gene, I'm with ya smiling smiley Just different cars are easier or harder to do that too.. nice big vertical straight sections of sheet make life a lot easier. As for windows straight glass is a joy.

Sectioning a 40s pickup truck is a walk in the park.

I hope he doesn't mind me posting pics of his project.

Not a body-man doing this.

It's coming along very nicely... almost ready for final paint.

(Yes, it will now have three diffs instead of one, and two cams on top of five cylinders with a big hairdrier on the side)

It was an Audi Fox.

Wheelbase shortened almost exactly one foot... goal was Sport Quattro spec.

For some reason Audi folks have no issue with cutting up perfectly fine vehicles to give them short wheelbases. smiling smiley There are probably more SQ clones out there than Audi ever produced, and half of them still have the shallow-raked coupe windshield.
