No tengo ninguna broadcast TV, so I didn't watch it.

How much smashin' and bashin' was there?

Wouldn't mind seeing the Fiestas run the series, but I understand they're more like rallycross cars as they sit.

Yeah it would be sweet to see them here, but I think that by the RA rules those cars would be illegal. The production fiesta is a FWD car with a 1.6 turbo transverse engine. Those are all but a production layout with a longtudenal engines and AWD. From the pics seemed like the YBT engine.

So those Fiestas are, in essence, a cut & shut of an evolution of the Sierra Cosworth? I haven't seen any pictures of those cars under the hood.

If that's truly the case, BHWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome, I love it.

Hey, the Tim O'Neil/Air Force Reserve car from a few years back was the same idea. Did RA change the rules on Open class in terms of engine layout?

The front uprights and rest of suspension looked identical to the Group A Escort Cossie ones. The rear was a pretty rad looking custom setup with the shortest lateral arm I've seen, but adjustable everywhere.

I don't think anyone really cares much about the X Games though Timm. I've been out here in LA since Tuesday night, spent all day Wednesday helping out with MJ's car, but haven't gone back since. In fact, I left midway through practice on Wednesday to go buy a bunch of AN-3 stuff to get his hydraulic handbrake installed. It's a decent spectacle, but not all that important or relevant to most rallyists.

Paraphrasing...since they don't seem to want to include the interview online:

Kenny, you've won championships, won the Indy 500, and now you take gold at the X Games. How does this moment compare to your other achievements?

Oh. Well...this is...definitely...uh...up there.

Did you expect to win?

Well. You know. Something like this... This is... uh... Anything can happen.

Well said. smiling smiley

problem solved:

Seriously badass machinery. Methinks they could put a half-sized turbo on those things and turn the boost down and they'd make pretty damn good rally cars. They had to ballast the shit out of them for this, as I hear it.

Thanks for the piccies, Dave.

I think the "Duratec-R" is a newer engine/different block than the beloved YBT and not just "valve cover engineering" (I've been trying to search about it, but the business computer is in the middle of uploading to an off-site backup so my internet is dial-up slow), but it doesn't really matter.

The Fiestas are very much purpose-built machines. And very interesting that they went with a north south drivetrain arrangement. Was it because it was less expensive to build that way, or to get better weight distribution?

Now to steer this back closer to a relevant topic, do you think Boyesen reed valves will make my snowmobile get better throttle response? smiling smiley

Yeah its not the YBT, that one is chain driven so it has to be the duratec, whereas YB and Ztech were belt. Deegans valve cover was even blue. As for the layout, it might be because of the confined space under the hood. I cant see them fitting an engine AWD tranny and all the peripherals in that confined space.

You can't even fit a Duratec (Mazda MZR) between those Fiesta (Mazda2) frame rails with just a 2WD trans. Trust me, I've checked...

I talked with the team owner a bit about the car. The block is standard Duratec (per the rallycross rules), but the head is something they make themselves (!). Note the aluminum tube just above the header flange. That's a water manifold collecting the coolant from the four individual coolant outlets above each combustion chamber. The production head doesn't have that...

I've seen more powerful MZR engines (~1200 hp) using production cylinder heads, but they do only run about 6 seconds at a time. These supposedly last a rallycross season.

Current (Euro) rallycross regulations still require a restrictor, all the top cars make about 550 hp that way.

For Pikes Peak...no restrictor, hence the 800 hp numbers being thrown around.

Looks like the cam cover that Raceline in the UK sells for their duratec motor builds.

Sweet cars, would be good to see another manufacture take on Subaru for the season next year.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Any idea what size restrictor they have to run there?

The 875 number really is meaningless, then, since that was at sea level. At the start line it was (according to the team) 769. By the top, with no air, a broken turbo, a flat tire and brakes on fire, it was probably only 200...
