New Zealand rally vacation
September 04, 2009 01:44AM
Ok, 1 week before my big rally vacation. I took advantage of some crazy sales and bought cheap tickets to New Zealand.

I'm renting a shitbox ($22/day) and driving as many of the old WRC stage roads as i can (I have the route books from 2003 Rally New Zealand).

Then I'm heading down to the south island and watching the Rally of Nelson. Just a local event (end of their season) but a small local rally in New Zealand should be better than anything we have here.

If anybody has any tips, picture/info requests, or jealous commentary, bring it on.

To get you in the mood; If you can find it, watch the movie "Bad Taste". Its an EPIC zombie movie made by good old boys from NZ. (really, its good!)

So most of your driving is on the North island right? Up near Auckland? Where are your stops and routes and such shit?

So many good choices of cars there... you could get a skyline, a celica ct-4, mazda gt-r.... what are you two ridin' in?

Find Andrew Hawkeswood. Lives in Auckland and a really cool guy. Possibly competing in that rally even.

First week is north island (as are all the old WRC stages), second week, and the Rally of Nelson, is on the south island.

There are lots of great cars in NZ, but for $23/day, I'm stuck with a Nissan Sunny or a Toyota Corolla, and I don't get to choose which one. Sunny will probably suck less.

There's a Skyline shop in Rotorua that I'm planning to visit. http://www.ripsltd.com/
I was looking into Infiniti V8 swaps into R32 bodies recently, and these guys were working on one using the AWD drivetrain from a JDM Nissan President. I'm hoping its still there...

Andrew Hawkeswood is, indeed, running in the Rally of Nelson. Running an open-class EVO 7. How do you know him?

Competed at Pike's Peak with him in 05. Helped find a rally car for him to use for practice since his Unlimited car was still in customs. Breakfast a few times too.
