LOL - The rev limiter is set at 7900rpm and I'm not afraid to use it!

Your motor sounded great! Is it a 1.6 or? Trans?
My 97 hatch is mostly finished but needs some shakedown before it will be ready to go on stage- I sure hope it works.

Dont worry about the engine or tranny, just mind the front ball joints and the rear trailing arms.

Engine is a transplant from a 1.8L Integra. Actually multiple integras, as the bottom end is from a non-VTEC model (B18A1) and the head is from a VTEC GSR (B18C1). Mild home bowl blending and port matching by some idiot who doesn't know what they are doing (me), some ARP rod bolts, and some cheap high compression cast pistons. Otherwise stock.

The machine shop went a little crazy with the cylinder hone, so the thing burns oil like crazy. But, I have been beating on this thing regularly (rallycross and autocross) for 1.5 years, and it is holding together.

I am in the process of putting together a 2.0L version using a CRV block. Forged rods and pistons to boot. Hopefully will be up and running in the next month.

As for the trans - it is from a Del sol B16A2. I installed a helical LSD from an Integra Type-R. Seems to work pretty well, but I would like to try a FWD with a clutch type one of these days for comparison.

Hey - I would love to see some pictures of your Civic rally car - post them up!

Funny that you should mention that. I have actually been rallycrossing this car for 4 years now, with 8-10 rallycross events per year. The front ball joints are original and now have 200,000 miles on them. Still solid as a rock.

The lower rear trailing arms are still original, but have prothane bushings now. The upper rear trailing arms are aftermarket adjustable length. Not sure how the aftermarket ones will hold up, but they have about a year on them now.

I guess rallycross really is that much lamer than rally, as I haven't seem any of these issues.

Clutch diffs are great but a helical's still better than an open.

I hear tell that a certain Group 2 Neon is running a helical diff, too.

Jon,

Great stuff. I am going down a similar path so I will share my findings with you to hopefully save some effort.

My previous motor was a CRVTEC and it worked well, even though it was not sleeved and bored to 85mm(dangerously thin walls). But I found out that the lack of crankcase breathing was a problem(unique to CRV blocks). I installed the Endyn breather kit and also vents on the valve cover but was never satisfied with any of them. I switched to a GSR block and sleeved it(Darton). Not only it solved the breather issues but it had the sandwiched oil cooler. I had thought about adding an external oil cooler but it gets complicated with routing hoses/reliability. Sure the external unit is more effective, but it adds failure points. I am using a GSR trans with 99 SI 3rd, 4th, 5th and a 4.93 FD. OEM helical LSD too. Building an even better trans now.

I attached pictures of my reinforced RTA and LCA

I've never had ball joint problems on my Integra or Civic after years of stage rallying. That may be an RSX thing--rear trailing arms did have issues.

Thanks for the info guys. Those look like some nice beefy trailing arms. I was thinking about making some custom lower control arms to accommodate a standard bilstein 1/2" rod end shock. Still need to get on the tube and do some design.

I already have installed a GSR oil cooler on my LS block, and will carry that over to the B20 block. I think it works best for my application as an oil heater - as I usually only have like 1 minute to warm up the engine before I have to go balls out on the rallycross course. Luckily the Water to oil cooler works both ways!

I was planning on using an external catch can with some Prelude screw in vent tubes on the block. Wasn't planning on any additional tubes going from the valve cover though. Can you elaborate on the breather problems you were having?
