When shit goes south you dont tuck your tail and withdraw.
You duct tape the hatch in place of the broken windshield and finish the event!

First rally, flipped pretty violently after changing shocks in front "Just because" I had them.
Night, windshield, hood and back window go sailing into the night.

I swear, noob co driver turns while thinks are still going tink tink cluck and says "That was my first time, John. Thanks for being so gentle"....."reckon we outta put the triangle out?

I wanted the windows cause the damn rubber gaskets cost mid 40s each so we searched in the dark and found them.Front smashed, rear intact.
Shoved the hood on and floored it.
Dave the co-driver is sorta TRYING to say "Fawkin take it.....wind catcheds hood and flies off into the night.
We stop and search and find it and look some for the FUCKIN BLACK DUCT TAPE INSIDE THE DARK BLUE INTERIOR.

2 BRILLIANT BLUNDERS right there/

Came upon a friend, Steve Roberts out with a shearedspindle in is Maz-dog, borrowed a flash-light---we had one but too dark to find it--- found the "Duck" tape, crammed the hood on and taped the fawk out of it.
Finhed the stage and we'ze was freezing so we stop, got the backl window out and taped the fawk out of that.

After that we could have some fun.

Till the State Patrol pulled me over about 1.00 AM

They let them finish the last stage, they requested to start very last, and were going transit speed.
Brian Goettlib and Rebecca Huston waited at the finish to escort them back to the final MTC.
Rear window was tinted, so technically laminated.

Slocum should know better. Illegal Service, application of duct tape by fellow competitors. (and probably the removal of hatch and the removal and installation of license plate...)

I can't see that being safer than running without windscreen.

Whoever said 'we can't let you start without a windscreen but if you duct tape your hatch to the front it's OK' should have their head examined.

When I worked in Africa we would always have a set of goggles and an "emergency windshield" thing in the car.

I agree with Kieth in that taping the hatch to the front is worse than running without a winshield. Didn't they have sunglasses in the car? As long as they had eye protection I would have let them transit to the finish. I assume the glasses were lost in the roll?

Tough call. Without eye protection they are not leagle on the road. A tinted hatch window taped to the front is also not leagle. What is the lesser of the two evils verses being a dick and forcing them to have it towed back?

I believe that VanWay is/was running national 2wd, so he needed the points for the finish - they were willing to have their service crew bring a piece of lexan out (and definitely taking the illegal service penalty), but were having a hard time getting in touch with them.

(as was foretold during the whole operation, debate over the 'safety' of this has reared its head...) I (and plenty of others who were there) agree that this is less safe than running w/o the windshield - but rules is rules, and chances of RA convening a committee on the spot to rewrite the rules seems pretty slim. Hopefully this incident will cause them to re-examine the rule before next year.

Best part was after they had finished taping it on, and VanWay hopped in and kinda said "I can't really see..."

Actually the tint would have had to be there. Tint = laminate.

What rule?

The car needs a windscreen when it goes through scrutineering. After that the organizers can inspect the car at will but only the chief scrutineer can exclude the car for safety reasons. (Although I suspect RA stewards and/or Hurst would try to intervene)

I simply can't see Hurst, stewards or the chief scrutineer OK-ing this in lieu of a missing windscreen.

Marshall: Uh, you don't have a windscreen, you can't continue.
Co-Driver: Are you the Chief Scrutineer? Have a look at this line in the rule book, you don't have the authority to stop me for a missing windscreen. K, thanks, bye.

Ultimately, if they needed the finish (and could afford to take an illegal service penalty) they shouldn't have rolled in the first place!

1. There was no illegal service. All parts were carried in (or on I suppose) the car and carried out by ourselves and our competitors. We didn't even check in late as it was a turnaround stage and there was no transit time.

2. We were wearing glasses behind the windscreen. Trust me, I want to avoid eye injuries more than anyone out there.

3. We took the license plate off the hatch and taped it to the rear of the car, to keep things legal of course.

4. Grant is right about the tint. It's technically a laminate...

5. After it all I don't disagree with the rule. The only way we could pull this off was because we were in a hatchback. If we weren't we would have had to try to remove the back window without breaking it at the side of the road with limited tools.

6. Dillon could see lefts and straight. I called rights and then talked him through corners- "tighter, tighter, open it up a bit, perfect."
