I must explain, the colorful prose in the subject line is not mine. It is a cut and paste of the subject line from the email Andrew Havas sent me with the link to this video

from the 2001 Rallye International Charlevoix in his Mazda RX7. I think it was a comment on my email address which has been oppositelock@hotmail for the past 10 years.

Behold the power of the orange! And y'all are a bunch of pussies for holding the steering wheel with two hands.

Andrew has a Saenz dogbox in his RX7 but it was popping out of gear on this event which is why he was steering with one hand and holding the shifter in gear with the other.

Tooo coool.
How can people even contemplate Golves when they see a vid like this?

Just a bit nicer steering and it'd be 'parfait'!

It was also the reason he crashed while running in 4th overall position. He's got a steering quickener for the lousy RX7 steering box and the kickback after landing from a jump or something broke his wrist (or sprained it, I'm not sure) and he went off.

This COULD be an educational discussion for the young 'uns.

This SHOULD illustrate why PS is so desirable, especially with the very UN-desireable deep offset old school wheels with the BIG scrub radius.

Any of youse guys thunk about old school scrub radius???

Sounds beauty. Makes me miss my old peripheral port.

I don't understand one thing though - the stock manual box (it was a manual box, right?) with a 1.5 quickener spliced in is only 2.6 turns lock to lock, which is only slightly less than the stock P/S box which most people run without the pump just fine. (On dirt at any speed the steering's still too light to need more than a few fingers)

Or was there some fancy funky steering arm thing going on that made the steering faster than I think? He sure didn't seem to be turning the wheel very much.

snow + RWD + highspeed + quickener = very little steering

You don't need to turn the wheel very much when you are steering with the throttle!

Also the front suspension on his car is DMS struts for a Gen.2 RX7 with Gen.2 spindles and Turbo II brakes and custom made chromoly tube a-arms with a wider track and lengthened tie rods.
