Was that an AWD or RWD Ford? It looked too sideways to be AWD, and too straight to be RWD.

Which is of course an Xratty/Sierra shell with a couple of inches cut out behinf the drivers seat to shorten wheelbase from 102.7" to 100.5". (and Mk V Escort hatch hood, doors and roof.)(Which Ford did to fight the all conquering Lancia Intergrales on asphalt--specifically the tight asphalt like San Remo, Monte Carlo, Corsica)

Its gotta to be the stache right?

Man, I'm feeling old that the Ford Cosworth is now a classic rally car.

That was Kankkunen with the Ford Escort WRC at the 1998 WRC Finland. Those were the days, and that was the highest spec Escort before they started using the Fockus.

Yep. In the rear they used the huge cast aluminum upright from the front from a '89-90 GpA car, made some links a somple tower in the trunk and low and behold modernised it.

Interestingly I've read a few different places that, as we all know, the "World Rally Car" rules say you can turbo and fourwheeldrive-ize----abd make tunnels and towers "from a car built in a minimum of 25000 indentical cars".
Since earlier Ford had been very vocal about lowering the numbers of cars made to qualify for GpA and GpN, there were only a smidgen over 3,000 or something paltry
Escort Cosworths made---so a LOT of behind the scene horse trading was done to allow the Escort World Rally car to run.

Pity it took Ford nearly a decade to do the rear suspension fix. So it's just a copy of an existing front end, like the early Quattros? HA!

atmo, that doesn't look all that different from Mikko's driving on SS14 iirc of GB this year.

unfortunately, nothing on youtube other than the short clip from 15, so I've got no visual evidence to back me up.

Under the Gr A rules they couldnt really change the geometry of the suspension. Only when the WRC rules allowed more freedom is when they went to the lateral link setup, instead of the old trailing arm deal.

Here's a few pics of the Escort WRC rear end.

We've talked of copying it for my car and using a Toyota Supra diff, STI uprights and brakes, a custom stub shaft for the upright to use Porsche 930 CVs which have 4 degrees more articulation than the stock Merkur stuff. Would still cost less than any off the shelf Ford stuff and would give me full control of alignment settings in the rear. Of course, this is pointless to really try to do until I find myself trading times or nearly with Wimpeys, Cody Crane, Lauchlin, or Utecht.

For me I do not think I have ever seen anything better then

http://www.tonigardemeister.com/ under G videos -
SM Kouvola rally 2006 SS 1

Driving a car we all could realistically build in our own garages if we were willing to spend the $50K or so in parts. No magical bits, just a normal rally car going flat out.

Not that any of us would ever go this fast!

In the long run reality always wins.
