Yup, I meant Starlet not Tercel...they sold far too many Tercels in the states though..

So they have and keep older cars due to costs. Nothing wrong with that. We throw away entirely too much stuff keeping up with the Joneses.

Other than WRC events, do they have a National/Regional or club structure like we do or do they just have rallies?

How did the prices compare back in the day between the Euro cars and the Jap cars? Was there any sort of import duties on the imported cars? Toyota must have sold a lot of Starlets and Corollas in Europe. What did Honda and Nissan do? Were the Escorts and Volvos more expensive than the Jap imports (like models)?

I do wish we were more into the 'club" attitude. We maintain a lot on Malcolm Davies Talon and some on Lou Becks Focus. Not for money, just for 'fun'. It is pretty neat when everyone shows up and thrashes on the cars, although I'm too old and cranky to pull the all nighters working on race cars these days.

Gene, there're plenty of rallies on any level: http://www.autourheilu.fi/lajit/kilpailukalenteri/2010/
Just in Jan/Feb they have 17 rallies (Ralli) and 15 Rally sprints (RS). All that in area of California!
All cars are and have always been expensive.
Volvo, Saab, Ford, Datsun, Lada, Opel, Fiat, BMC/Leyland and others have had factory dealer teams. All cars and parts were openly sold to privaters. That helped to gain brand following. Maybe Ford's been the best to help privaters and it still shows.
I'm with you - we should have more Rally Clubs. I'm suprised you WA/OR guys don't have weekly meetings and a big, shared shop like in Finland and Sweden. They share cost and every one gets fixed time to work on their cars.
Here,. in SoCal, the traffic and distances are way too big. It won't work. Also, to rent/build a shop is very expensive.

We're starting a rally coop type thing going. Currently in the back area of Checkpoint, but we've got five of us already in and it's alot of fun. Probably move into a new shop in March that will be smaller, but still sufficient. It is so so much more fun to work on rally cars while hanging out with friends and others. (and drinking beer and listening to music the whole time too.)

JVL:

Its pretty obvious that the reason that Finns don't rally MKII VWs is that there are none left in the country, all having been wrecked in prior Group F events.

Hmmn, from these three sentences, I've deduced that boys are either front wheel or all wheel drive and Grant is far more adventurous than I winking smiley

Yeah Grant, you could have worded that better. If you read it literally, you know... But I think I know what you really meant. And Ted, if you want to get nitpicky, it's not actually clear from that statement which is RWD: the girlfriend or her older brother?

I was basing the drive wheel assignation on the inference that she's his girlfriend in the present tense and that Grant would make the most "fun" choice smiling smiley

awesome. one of the best crash video's i've ever seen. i lost count of how many trees were taken down! some say they want to go to finland to learn how to drive, how about learning how to crash in spectacular style!
