What is the biggest obstacle keeping you from rallying, or rallying more ?

I know why I'm not and why my close friends in the sport are not. I'm wondering what others reasoning is, what would need to change, personal, event or sport wise for folks to get out there and compete.

As always IMHO

I'm lazy and poor, in no particular order smiling smiley

But I'm going to finish my heap to a lower standard and run some rallycrosses and hillclimbs.

Escalating safety expenses and insufficient events within a decent driving distance.

This summer I've hit a minimum of 2 rallycrosses a month and I did a stint of at least one per weekend for a month. No it's not stage rally but between the three or four local regions, it's more accessible and I spend at most $250 per rallycross, all expenses included. Worst ones expense wise are the SuperRallyX series in Michigan because it's the furthest away, has the highest entrance fee, and it's $10 both ways on the turnpike now.

Fun to $$ ratio is out of whack.

Hard to justify spending $20K+ on a asset that does not hold it value & can only be used a few times a year at great expense.

That and I have many other time commitments to do things that are a hell of a lot of fun on their own right.

Also rally is fairly dangerous when trying to be highly competitive.

In the long run reality always wins.

Agree

I don't see it so much as dangerous as likely to cost a bundle in repairs. I guess it all depends on your definition of dangerous.

Well, no, even I see it as dangerous. It just doesnt bother me as much.

I think it depends on how much you're bothered by danger.

Either time or money. I've had trouble putting both together at the same time for a while now. I'm hoping to improve that situation next year.

got a wicked pay cut last year when "the economy died" and that was the end off rally until I figure out how to get paid more. So i guess you could say the cost of rally is the problem I have right now. Not only the cost of events but I am not really prepared for the cost if I wad my car up at an event.

<--------This is my issue - when I had more time than I knew what to do with I had no money. Got a job where I make enough money and now have no time. Now we are having another kid (not completely planned!) and time is tighter than ever.

Like Mr. Bottles said, Cost per fun ratio sucks!

There are so many things in life that you can do for fun that cost less than ONE rally weekend! By that I mean that you can outright buy new toys and start a new hobby.

Ony problem is rally is so frickin addictive, once you try it you cant ever get it out of your head.

Money mostly. But like so many others, when I'm actually making money I have zero time left over.

Money and Time - mostly just time. I can only afford 1 day a week. So figure 40 or so days a year for 6-8 hours a time. = a long build

But getting married (add 1 year to build and subtract $$$$) then buying a house (subtract more $$$$) then getting layed off (subtract all remaining $$$$$).

But now this year I've got the job thing figured out and making some damn good money so it's really just time now.

It's not so much the expense of doing one event, it's the expense of getting to that event. Tow vehicles, fuel, time off work to travel 1600+ miles, etc.
Taking the car to the PNW and leaving it there and just flying out to do events is really the most economical way to rally. Those that live there have it easy.
I withdrew my entry for Rally Colorado simply because I didn't feel there was meaningful competition. That and I knew I'd have the new shop and could go through and do some stuff to my car that's hugely needed to increase reliability and my own personal comfort at spending thousands on a weekend.
