To answer Tom's question, I bought a car, and did my first rally a few months later. The cost/time of events is were I run out of money now post-pay cut. I would be all over "local" $200 one day events.

I bought, but didn't get on stage until a year after I brought it home. That was fine though, because all those silly safety items, rear discs, and LSD install takes time and money. That's still about the only major operations I've done on the car. There are a few more coming up, but after that, I don't plan on doing that many more things to this car other than just keeping it reliable.

With the whole RA thing about needing coefficient points, those starting out in the G2 and Production classes, seems to me that if they really want to build an open class car, that it would make sense to get their initial time in in a purchased car, build the car they really want while racing the car they don't want (and making sure to be nice to it and finish every event) then when new car is built, sell the old car to someone else hoping to do the same thing.

The biggest problem with rallying in the US is that many getting into the sport in the past few years have been drawn in by VW, Subaru or Mitsubishi. And for some reason car guys get these weird dedication to certain marquees so they all want to race one of those. The problem is that VWs are shit and who really wants to spend that much time trying to keep your car running and sort out all the recurring problems and Subaru and Mitsu just can't be competitive in Open class unless you have a huge budget and I think deep down, especially for us younger folk, we want to be able to win. So they get bored with all the money they are spending and move on to something else.
A focus on simple and reliable 2WD rally cars needs to become the focus of rallying in the US. We brought a $1100 BMW into the shop last night to build specifically for Max Attack! The owner has a Open class car but can't afford the expense associated with rallying in Open class.

All the more reason to say FUCK RALLY AMERICA.
They make rules they themselves didn't do.
And of course they waive the rule for anybody who is a has been "eggggstreme" clown.

People sell cars for all sorts of reasons besides its not fun anymore.

Wanting a newer car
Wanting a better platform
Wanting a new type of car
Wanting a better built car
Wanting a new brand of car
Wanting a more generic, proven car
Wanting a cheaper car
Wanting a more expensive car
Wanting a flashier car
Wanting a less flashy car

People have all sorts of motivations. The general theme is want. Just because they dont NEED to sell their car, doesn't mean they don't want to.

Pearls of wisdom from Timmy. oi!
You really do have some cognitive difficulties don't you?

The POINT is that the car somebody is selling doesn't yank their cord, fulfill their fantasies, float their boat, whatever.
A half astute person would naturally wonder, "Why are they selling it? Will I come to the same conclusion soon enough?"

You could add to everyone of those glaringly obvious rationalisations the clause "and then they'll have more fun".
That is if one understood what one was talking about and wasn't interesting in just arguing and writing platitudes.

If you actually believe that just because one thing doesn't make one person happy, if can't make anyone happy, you are the one with the cognitive difficulty.

Anyway, before you go off on some crazy rampage, I'm done with this argument. You really aren't worth my time.

No you still don't get it.
YOU aren't worth the effort to explain anything to because you know everything already.
You're of the mistaken belief that all opinions are equally valid.

And you don't understand normal English.

or, maybe it's too much for that driver to handle, it's not fun for them because they just don't know how to drive it properly

for example, not everyone can get the hang of rallying a rwd car, so they buy one, they suck at it, because they suck at it it's not any fun

but in the hands of someone who can drive a rwd car properly, it may be the funnest thing ever

would hate for that poor little old datsun or mazda or whatever to sit ignored and unsellable because people thought "well, the guy/gal who owned it didn't get their titties all tight over it, so why would I?"

"The POINT is that the car somebody is selling doesn't yank their cord, fulfill their fantasies, float their boat, whatever. A half astute person would naturally wonder, "Why are they selling it? Will I come to the same conclusion soon enough?"

Of the cars that I know of that are for sale or sold recently:
1 golf - sold because of divorce and a change of lifestyle.
1 golf - sold because of no time or desire to return to the sport as a driver. (It was bought as a prepared car from someone who had it as a spare shell after the buyer wrote off a previous shell.)
1 Subaru - sold because of a change in work situation, growing commitments and reduced available time.
1 Toyota - Sold because of increased business responsibilities, heavy volunteer commitments and no time for driver or co-driver to compete
1 Toyota - no desire to spend money on seat upgrade and heavy volunteer time commitments
1 Volvo - return to school and resulting lack of funding/time
1 focus - economic downturn induced lack of funds

In my own case:
RX7- sold when I had an opportunity to get a well sorted (and well used) 2.5RS - AND had a buyer that approached me.

2,5RS- sold it when some one called me up and told me they were buying it from me.

Obviously no one will say that they are selling a car because it isn't fun any more ... but when Norm made the leap to open class, his PGT car was potentially for sale and had a LOT of people that were interested.

I stand by the premise that you can buy a $5,000 car, run a season (or a handful of events) and sell the car for $4500 and loose far less in depreciation that you would on a fresh build or a $20,000 car. By doing so, you learn what you really need to do when you build a car, you drive a POS and probably learn a thing or two about driving on stage that you can transfer to the next car, AND you do it without risking something that you poured your own time or lots of money into.

It absolutely isn't about instant gratification, it is about a low(er) risk way of finding out if the sport really floats your boat.

Oh you're right your deep and penetrating analysis is obviously right gained as it is in your few years hanging around the sport, and overwhelms my experience completely, yep I haven't learned a thing in the last 25 years.

And I guess those guys that have bought pre-built cars that need such extensive re-working to be half right were just idiots and complainers.

I think I'll kick them in the nuts next time i see 'em.

Yo! Derek! come here!
