Buying used race suits?
November 20, 2009 03:57PM
So, after these threads about what's stopping you from rallying, I started wondering if I could at least get out there to co-drive. I decided to look around at suit prices again, and lo and behold found a good deal on ebay for a suit of my size (which appears to be pretty rare). It's of a well-known brand, and is FIA 8856-2000 and SFI 3.2A/5.

My question is, is there anything that I should look out for in particular when buying a used race suit? Is buying a used race suit something that is not recommended?

If I end up getting this, then it's off to buying a helmet at Goodwill or Salvation Army. grinning smiley

I got mine on ebay for $125 plus $25 shipping and it's a momo suit (way more comfy than the one I'd been borrowing).

Tina Warner has used it all year (since I haven't, rather to have it used than sit imo) and it's been just fine.

unless there's something obvious, I don't see anything wrong with buying one used.

unless, of course, you're JVL, then if they're selling it, SOMETHING must be FAWKING WRONG with it, and therefore, it'll be FAWKING WRONG for you too.

I own one of the most hideous race suits out there....so old it doesn't even have an SFI tag on it...bought it for $100 and I have been using it for five years....I don't see why you need to buy a race suit for 500 and up...

Should be fine, just wash it first, haha.

Special stage has a few alpine stars suits in the classified for decent prices. I have no idea what size/shape you are, but they are nice suits.

I see nothing wrong with buying a used suit, but I will say if you plan on spending a fair bit of time in them, get one that fits you and is comfortable (i.e. not too hot)...

A poorly fitting or overly warm suit is no bargain at any price.

I'm self concious so I have to have one that I like the looks of. Actually my current one I want to replace because it's just a tad small.

Thanks everyone! I will buy a sewing machine and start working on making my suit!

Oh no, John, it's actually a black suit too (but it's less than half the price of a new one). I am not crazy about the color because of the hot rallies in California. Plus it has red details, which will make me look something like the Devil's co-driver. I should get a black helmet to go with it. And a big old Texaco patch for it.

Grant, do you have a Seven race suit?

Tim, I'll tell you the size after I get it. Like I said, it seems rare to find used, and I don't want to jinx the good deal.

that's part of the reason why I got the one I did, the one I'd been borrowing didn't fit me well, was hot, stiff, etc

this one though, awesome, love it and really loved the price! hell, if it hadn't fit great, I'd have been able to resell it for what I paid for it
