'street' studs, with restricted relief from the tire face and max number of studs per tire.

specifically:
4.0 Tire Studs
Studded tires may be used on Rally West or RPM events with the following limitations:
a) Studs are only allowed on events outside of Manitoba that take place from October 1st to
April 30th of the following year
b) Studs are only allowed on stand-alone regional events, not on National / Regional
combined events.
c) Studs must protrude no more than 3.5mm from the tread face.
d) The visible portion of each stud must be no more than 5mm in diameter, and any crosssection
of the visible stud (as originally installed) must be perfectly round in shape, and
must be of solid construction, not hollow.
e) The studs must be commercially and commonly available, and of conventional design,
from tire dealers in the Rally West or BC regions (i.e., no homemade or specially
imported studs).
f) There must be a maximum of 130 studs per tire, regardless of tire size
g) Studs must be run on all four corners of the car
h) All studded tires must be presented to the scrutineer before they can be used on an
event
i) Studs cannot be replaced in, or added to any tire for the duration of the event once the
tire has passed scrutineering.
j) Studs are permitted in all Region classes.

Hi Kids,

I just returned from the Totem rally up in B.C. It was some serious fun in the snow! The roads were fantastic. There was snow on all but one stage. About half of the transits were also snow covered. High speeds and low grip! 23 entries. Two cars destroyed, one rolled and one over a cliff. Two more cars had big offs. Several cars visited the scenery. Remember, this was a TSD! I even paid a visit to a cow pasture. Many thanks to Tom B. for the limited slip transmition. I wouldn't have been able to make it without the diff!

For all you stage rally prima donnas, I paid $195 (late entry) for two very long days of killer rallying. I know, I know, it was a TSD. It would have been challenging for any 2WD stage car. Everyone had fun slipping and sliding around central B.C. for two days.

THINK ABOUT IT! Thunderbird Rally is in February. It will be the same type of event. Have a look at Rallybc.com.

If anyone is interested I am willing to answer questions and or help you get ready.

Robert.

I did Thunderbird in 2004 on the way home from picking up my 2.5RS rally car. It was a brilliant way to get to understand the car and get comfortable with how it performed and handled (even though TSDs are on open roads and you can't really wring out the car)

I did the Thunderbird rally in 1991 in my Omni rally car with studded Hakkapelitas. It was a blast! JV was there in a SAAB 900 as well. Plenty of snow and 2 cas rolled on that one, too. Including the recently Dearly Departed Gary Reid who rolled his daughter's VW GTi he was borrowing! So the first stage of the rally I come around a corner to see a Mustang sliding backwards down the steep hill towards me! The only stage I knew I zeroed wasn't even scored because there was too much snow for the stage crew to get to their check point sad smiley . Then they had a stage on an ice racing course on a frozen lake, just a couple of laps around it. We had to wait until the racers were done for the day and by then it was dark and there were NO reference points for out there, just a tire on the inside of the track every so often. You couldn't see the corner until you were in it. Made it challenging. So anyway, the organizers set the target time to something they thought nobody would be able to reach. Ha, ha, only 2 of us in our rally cars actually beat the target time.

I am planning to do the Thunderbird in Feb, in the Rally Merkur with the Wife co-driving. It really does look like fun!

We should talk sometime in the next month Robert.

Depends on the 60 miles doesn't it? This won't be like 60 miles in Pomroy or Colorado!

I think that this video epitomizes the rally spirit. The Volvo at the beginning pressing on after a big spin and hard hits. The spectators running to help even before the cars come to a stop. The naked fans in the freezing cold. The guy getting hit by the falling tree and no litigation. The Audi driver hard in reverse to get back on course.

Nice.

Sounds like a good time.
I'm looking forward to the Minnesota winter rally over here in January. Two days from duluth to grand marais and back for like $30.
I missed it last time it ran in 2008, but things got a bit snowy then:

Dave... Robert and I were talking to Gary Reid just yesterday and unless he passed away overnite, the reports of his death are greatly exagerated.
Gary Diebolt passed away last week. May he Rest In Peace.

Mr. Reid regaled us with the story of the rolling of his daughter's GTI. He and Steve Richards had won T-Bird the year before and were defending their win.

Robert and I's thrill to dollar ratio was way up there. Stage Rallying is the ultimate rush while participating and is something I miss, but it is hard to beat our $500 bucks total cost for the weekend for 2 days and 500 miles of intense TSD rallying in the snow. So if you have a stage car and limited funds are jonesing for an adrenaline rush, start planning for T-Bird.
