On national events you could usually do this without much drama but to say that having 40 service vehicles speeding all over on public roads is just as safe as having them all parked in one spot all day is disingenuous. I can remember Rim of the World could get pretty hairy rushing all around on those twisty roads also being used as tranist roads for the rally cars. I also seem to remember a pretty bad accident involving a service vehicle and a civilian car during a rally back east several years ago. > I've opened serviced by myself and been able to > service the car between ever stage if needed. A decade or so ago in the US there was a tired service team that crossed the double yellow and impacted a civilian car head on. I can't remember right now if it was one or two deaths.
That's when people in the US woke up to the idea that rushing around to service all willy-nilly wasn't the safest way to do it. Yes, you still have to drive to a central service but there's really LOADS of time to do so. Plus there can be an official service route, directions, times, etcetera. Anders Grassroots rally. It's what I think about. |

Of course we could just ban service all together, that would cut down on officially entered/registered vehicles on the road, that would make things even safer ... Just saying ... oh and spectating too! Wait that one is pretty dead anyhow ... LOL

From an organizers view point I would always opt for a centralized service area. In fact, from an organizers point of view there are no down sides. As a mechanic I hate central service areas. I quit servicing because it was so boring.

And just like the "discussion" about reverse seeding or the stage/transit format, a lot of things are done and said they CAN ONLY be done ONE WAY is because people are used to one way or the other. Typical 'merikan black/white one way or the the hiway mentality. I say if there were TONS of fun roads and a reasonable central service location for the day, why not, but if the event was spread out to utilise a who bunch of fun roads---and thereby minimising damage, disturbance etc or to utilise fresh timing crews, then why not have a sorta point to point event... The push towards rigid uniformity in anything is the sign of a small mind. We don't eat the exact same meal all the time or drink the same tea all the time or do the horisontal mombo the same way beginning to end do we? Variety! WE ought to be able to BE FLEXIBLE---ain't that one of the things that differentiates rally from track racing? > > Robert. > "You are way too normal to be on Rally Anarchy." > Eddie Fiorelli. oh come on, i'm going to call BS on this one. Mobile service stops? Leapfrogging service crews? pleeeze! everyone talks about how 'HANS' or 'too many safety requirements' stopped them from rally, or has made it 'too expensive.'
now yous old dudes are klammering to bring back multiple service trucks and 100+ transit miles for crews chasing cars across the state...requiring at least 2-3 service crew teams and maybe a SECOND service vehicle....now THAT would keep me out of rally financially. I already have too many tools....now practically double that? plus another tank or 3 of diesel, more wear and tear on the service truck(s) tires/etc, plus food/hotel for 2-3 more guys?
ok, and I"m going to call you out too JVL....mr. "don't rally anything but a volvo" phtptphtphtpttttt!!!!! now go away!! or I shall taunt you a sekohnd tyme!! Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |

One, everyone on this site is doing this for fun so voting for an action that makes it more dangerous is just stupid. Two, that number of deaths for competitors would be high. That number of deaths for people local to the rally that are just trying to drive home on a road that is normally deserted is one of the quickest ways to lose your road permits and get the event canceled. |

Centralized service just means you get to drink more at night.
And it makes things like hospitality tents that we all are so fond of a reality. You know, the ones with catered food, big screen TVs with rally videos and games on them, air conditioning, hot umbrella girls relaxing around, etc. And by reality I mean in my dream world. Grant Hughes |

Even then you didn't NEED it, you could do it with only one or two service crew guys and one truck and certainly a few people did but you wouldn't be able to service between every stage. National and, of course, divisional events only needed one service crew. Just make sure you've got good shocks in the service van and everything is tied down securely in the back... |

They still do a point to point race in Nevada, Vegas to Reno. I organized all the service for some friends team the first year of that event, these guys were Expert level Bike guys on a tall geared CR500, it would do 115 flat on the dry lakes. We had 3 crews, 3 riders and 14 stops. the race was just shy of 600 miles NON STOP! it was challenging, but really exciting too. You kind of had to break the law to keep up with a bike that averaged 60mph across the desert....
why don't we do a "Fun Run" from border to border in washington? I have all the routes, hotels every night, 150 miles per day, all gravel ect |
