A delicate question
December 21, 2009 01:40PM
I would like to put together a little PNW test day/BBQ thing. I was thinking of making a few runs in the middle of the day and then going to my garage for a cook out. My problem is that I don't know of any good roads to test on. I realize that this is like asking people for the location of the secret fishing spot!

I need to find a short bit of gravel road not too far from the Seattle metro area. The requirements are:

1) Safety, wide road, no deep ditches and not too many trees.
2) Dead end, I would like to be able to control access.
3) Location, I don't want to piss off any locals or have the cops show up.
4) A few L and R turns. 1-2 miles or even a loop.

This would not be any type of sanctioned or insured event. It is strictly at your own risk! INVITATION ONLY! If we can't trust you, you will not be welcome. I don't know how many cars would be attending but we can't have more than five or so.

I don't expect any of you to broadcast your secret spots over the internet, so send me a pm or e-mail.

Thanks in advance!

Robert.

I have a place well north that I use, I would love to meet a private land owner locally that allowed access to a road that was usable for testing...

Since I no longer run a car I can talk.

There are a number of good sections off I90 such as Denny Creek or like camp grounds but this time of the year they get snow. Some of the lower ones might be OK.

The area I have driven the most is to the North of Snoqualime Falls, there is a county road that runs parallel to the Hancock Timber Land (former Wheyerhouser) land, there are some decent sections in here, rally cars are most unwelcome in the Hancock land or at least were when the former owners (Wheyerhouser) had the land... This is in the area of Fury Lake Rd/ Tolt Resevor Road. Long ago it was possible to get off 203 onto 11th and join Griffin Creak Rd for a loop that ended up in near North Bend on the Tolt Resevor Rd. I last drove that in about 1987. Turbo #2 blew up in there somewhere on the GTX.

I have also done some testing on a road area that runs basically NE from Duval to Sultan, starts out as Stossel Creek and ends on Cedar Ponds/ Ben Howard Road. 323GTX gear box number 1 died on in there somewhere.

With Google maps etc today I can see these areas I use to drive a lot clearer. I think everything in closer has been built up.

As a side note, for me these days - I need a truly closed and controlled road to "test" as I am driving very quickly - I there for have not been out doing this type of thing in a long time - it is risky.

Sounds like things are changing fast up where I use to tread...

The roads are getting abandoned, land is getting gated etc...

This has been discussed off and on for quite awhile. Those of us not "testing" would provide radio coverage of the roads and offer up "distraction" for those who might want or need to pass through. A quick shout on the radio would forwarn those who were "testing" and the "hood up, won't start" distraction would allow the few extra minutes to either finish or ease up on the red mist. SAFETY is first on our minds. Thanks for the road suggestions. Keep 'em coming. We'll scout them out.

I have some dirt bike friends that have a private area just north of Everett, they have a regulation size dirt track, a field, motocross track, and a woods loop. There is at least 1-1.5 mile loop that is rally friendly, and a long straight dirt road. I have put the bug in their ear about having a few rally cars out there for testing. Maybe night would be better as there are no bikes on course then. Kevin bombs a beater Contour around, and there is a set of car friendly jumps along the dirt road....

Sean,

Your suggestion is really the best solution. I am getting to point in my life where the risk is not worth it (more on this later). I want to be legit and safe. Can we set up a face to face meeting with the land owner?

Derek,

Thanks for the ideas! I agree that the road would have to be positively clear.

Everyone,

My 40th birthday is comming up on Jan. 8th. Jim's b-day is Saturday the 9th. I wonder if we could do some sort of combo thing.

Wot da faque? You're older than Jim?
And if you're older than Jim you must be older than me cause I know Jim's turning 39.

Anybody wanna donate to Robert's "Now that you're 40 this is everything you'll need for the rest of your life" fund?
What's the cost for a 80z tube of Grecian Formula, a Economy Family sized tube of Preparation H and 2 condoms?
We oughtta be able to cough up enough!!
Come on this is serious shit turning 40.

If someone had some balls give this guy a call:
WAGNER FRED (appears to be a former mayor of Tacoma)
ERICKSON LOGGING II L L C & Wagner Development.
4425 S ORCHARD ST
TACOMA WA 98466

Parcel 3122079090 out by ravensdale, he has a few nice loops of recentally logged land so a few years till it does him good again, paid about $3.5M in 2006 for the plots.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=north+bend,+wa&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=60.158465,106.083984&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=North+Bend,+King,+Washington&ll=47.346994,-121.965837&spn=0.025559,0.051799&t=h&z=15

I am sure many more examples could be found.

Haha, It's not so much balls you'd need, its diplomacy, speaking skills, and possibly negotiating.

It is an interesting lead, though.

Not sure if we'll be in town, however if we are then we would love to celebrate with folks, if we don't have a place to thrash then we can at least talk ...

OK, I'll bite. I need suggestions on verbage. I can be diplomatic and I clean up real well for the face to face talking but I'll need something more than "please sir, can we drive like hoons around your stump farm and we'll sign somethin that releases you from any and all liability? Throw me some bones to work with and if we can put together something that doesn't sound crazy and may in some way be a positive thing for him I'll call him up.

Is there a tax write off for him? Could we advertise for him? Stickers on the cars at Doo Wops? Do we offer to plant seedlings? WHY should he even consider letting us knuckleheads play on his land? As a group we tend to come up with pretty good ideas and there are some among us that are smarter than the average bear, lets hear your ideas.

Robert doesn't need Grecian Formula, he needs Rogaine.
