Oh I hate them too, which is probably the best reason to build one.

Ted, I imagine that Safety Devices (http://www.safetydevices.co.uk) still makes weld-in FIA rollcage kits with real CDS for the last several generations of Civics (or just about any popular competition car, old or new). Their website is pretty lame, but it has the info to get in touch with them or one of their two resellers in the US, so you can ask and find out for sure if they still make them.

What about Custom Cages? They're T-45 though, I think, or CDS option. Do they make a honda cage kit?

That's what Evan Moen has in his ITR rally car. SD FIA cage made out of CDS.

interesting... looks like the only stitch welding they did was on the cage gussets.

Thanks guys for mentioning and linking Custom Cages. I was not familiar with them. It looks like they too have a couple of vendors in the US.

That's what's going in the car we're building now. Based on Zimmers concept it'll be an NA car running in open. Because of the lack of a turbo this car has no minimum weight. We're hoping for 2550lbs with a T45 cage (93 Impreza)

Because of lack of a turbo, you're in Open-Light which has no minimum weights? I'd hope you can get a GC8 without a turbo and a T45 FIA-H cage below 2500.

I've been looking at the GC8 cage from Custom Cages and it's obviously an old design. Do you know if you can add a harness bar (for HANS use) and an FIA bar in the door and still retain the FIA homologation?

FWIW, we're asked about ordering a pair of cages. Apparently there's a multi item discount, but we're still waiting on the quote.

If we get the car under 2500lbs it'll be a monster. You cannot add ANYTHING to a FIA cage. For the Impreza it has a gusseted x in the door, the down tube behind the A pillar and an X in the roof. What it doesn't have is sill bars, X in main hoop or harness bar. You just cross the belts and attach to the rear strut tower bar. Safe as a 253 cage? probably not. Safe enough for me, yup. And light as hell which is the whole point of this car.

Dave.

You don't know how many times i contemplated this! and i'd love to see the results.

I think the problem you'll have is Torque. Even a built SVX motor isn't going to give you the torque a big bad turbo motor will.

200 lbs, or 200 ft-lbs....

In a class like open light, if everyone has the lack of torque it can be equalizing. It won't win overall, but it is a cheap way to rally an AWD car and not get dragged into a spending battle.

But a short final drive will multiply the torque of the motor and then end result is about the same.

Shorter rear ratio is easy (if one looks around for old Nissan ratios)....front with a Sub-a-rat on the other hand, Hmmmmmm.
