Here are some incars from RTN 09 of Paul and I in his RSX with the 6.33. I believe 4 stages we had 4th OA Stage times with Stockish suspension and 100% street tires. The first day we were getting use to each other. Second day we were rocking! Dont mind the butterfly! ![]() Dont mind the banner tape! ![]() rally gods would turn in their graves if they ever knew Lada's were now part of EU rallying!!! |

In my case, 97 Civic Hatch, I have 8.75" rear wheel travel and the front of the traling arm does not hit. The lower perch of the rear 2.5" coilover(10.5" springs) does make light contact with the inside of the trailing arm at full droop-it will be corrected later. George Civic Rally Car |

I just weighed my newly built 97 Civic Hatchback and it is 2585 lbs. This weight is "in ready to rally condition":with tools, full of gas+, spare tire, etc. The cage is heavy, non-homologated RA/NASA/FIA spec. The car has aluminum front and rear skdplates plus plastic underbody protection-full coverage, reinforced bumper beams, reinforced control arms, and finally B-series motor and trans. It does have "fiberglass" hood and hatch.
I wonder what other G2 cars weigh, provided that they were newly built to the current cage specs? George Civic Rally Car |

I thnk this car was built at least 2-3 years ago and the cage rules were different then. It seems like a well thought-out car and hopefully I will see it up close at some point. The early Civics are definitely lighter but have less interior room, flexier bodies and less durable front suspension. I am curious to see what J. Wimpey' s new Golf will end up weighing(our cage design is similar). Also curious about any new Foci being built. George Civic Rally Car |

Part of the reason that I am interested in the newer ones, is that I might still be able to get a homologated cage kit for one. Although the newer Civic shells are heavier, T45 steel kits are much lighter than something you built yourself out of DOM and you will get jerked around less at tech with FIA cage certs. In New England, we pretty much have to go to Canada to get a new cage teched. I don't think anyone can keep up with the RA cage spec. BS. The homologation papers put the blame elsewhere.

> will end up weighing(our cage design is similar). Me too. The old car is 2340 with a full tank ready to rally and the only lightening we did was replacing the 3 rear windows with plastic. I think the new car will be a bit heavier--maybe 20lb extra tubing (most of the optional bars are 1" x 0.065" ![]() Without getting too clever (i.e. things we should do eventually anyway), it would be easy to drop 100lbs or more from either car. Estimated weight savings in parentheses. --Tubular subframe (3-4lb but lots of increased strength and ability to build lighter skidplate frame). If anyone is interested in a tubular subframe for an mk2 or mk3 VW, contact me as these are being built right now. I know that several people have broken the stock ones near the control arms. --Trim excess sheetmetal and brackets from the body (5-10lb) --Custom motor mounts (3-5lb) --Re-engineered skidplate & frame that doesn't weigh 75lb+ (25lb) --Fabricate an aluminum radiator support (might have to do this anyway) (3-5lb) --Gut the dash and excess portions of the heater system (3-8lb) --Aluminum seat mounts instead of steel (3-5lb) --Mildly Gut the bumper(s) (10lb) --Replace factory exhaust manifold on the 16v with a tubular header (2-4lb) --Remove evaporative emissions controls--charcoal canister & related (2-5lb) --Remove vacuum brake booster & replumb (2-5lb depending on the replacement configuration) --Remove rain gutters--ugly--(3lb) --Remove rear spoiler (1lb) More expensive things to reduce weight: --Gut the doors and add FIA style Al & Carbon impact panels (This might require a waiver of some sort) (10-15lb each) --Fiberglass hood & hatch (25lb hood 10lb hatch) --Fiberglass fenders (5lb) --6 to 8 gallon fuel cell ---it is a TDI (5-10lb plus ~7lb gallon for fuel so another 30-35lb at full capacity) --Lightweight hardware--remove, shorten, or replace with lighter fasteners wherever practical (10lb) --Tiny carbon mirrors (2lb) --Lightweight pulleys (2lb) --Lightweight flywheel (5lb) --Magnesium wheels (30lb+) --Fancy 2 piece rotors (5-10lb) --Fancy brake calipers (5-10lb) Things I won't do to reduce weight: --Replace front windows with plastic & sliders (20lb including power window regulators, glass, tracks & rubber seals) ____________________________________________________________- One. The only time my focus was weighed was at Rally WV a couple of years ago, I think it was 2750. It was in full rally dress with spare full tank of gas, fire suits, full camelpacks, spill kits, tools, etc. The car was also near completely stock at that time including the radio and front speakers, keyless entry, full stock exhaust, etc. Only thing that had been removed was the tar from the floors and the AC compressor and condenser.

Power windows is so nice!
My car is 2650 ready to rally, without any attempts to reduce weight and excessive amount of cage. A Duratec powered Merkur with a tubular or Group A rear suspension setup would likely be in the 2200-2300 lb area. I think weight difference between a FIA homo cage and a DOM FIA253 constructed cage was somewhere around 80-100 lbs. It was a while ago though that I calculated that so I may be recalling it incorrectly. Grant Hughes |

I attached the mentioned drawing for fun. My golf was like 2450 with nothing other than the interior out of it, that was with tube frame seats and a big 1/8" steel skid plate over the gas tank too. I hope I can get the volvo down to something reasonably close to the 2535 lbs weight limit without getting nuts with the 3L in it. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/30/2009 11:29AM by Carl S. |

There's cage kits for EG/EK... I think from some research that I did a bit ago. Evan Moen ran a Safety Cages FIA kit in his Integra Type R and I was looking up and saw EG/EK options still available. I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding EP or later generations.
