Ya I see that Gene, Dale and I all ran the 1989 Doo Wop 3 rally so yep I guess we have all been around for some time now. He reports a new head, mains, rings etc so likely that was due to the Tbelt.
Gene will you let me run with the 36mm turbo restrictor? I am sure it is just a typo or brain fart but a few extra HP never hurt anyone's driving abilities ![]() In the long run reality always wins. |

So got the rest of the story...Jack Brodhead bought it from back east. It is the one with the heavy steel diamond plate sunroof filler. Jack is 6'1" and his head always hit the roll cage on the side. Just the way they are. It had a punky motor from the belt breaking. Jack had an extra motor that he sold Dale with the car. We haven't talked to Dale in at least a year. Jack paid $2500 for the car broken and $2k seems pretty cheap at this time. Umm..no to the restrictor at 36 tho... |

John,
There is no plus tolerance. A 34mm restrictor needs to be 33.90 or something like that. My checker is 34mm OD and needs to not slide thru. Now if it did friction fit and slide thru I could pass one time. If it rattled side to side not allowable. Easy to check on a MItsu thankfully. Derek, I haven't seen the car in a long time but it could be a cheap fun car sounds like. It only has to meet appendix 1 for the cage, which I'm sure it does. If you get it at Dale's you can swing in on your way back and we can go over the car if you like. |

We've got a huge driver here on the East Coast named Darryl Pugh - He's got to be at least 6'4" and he drives a diamond star. When you see him in it, his head is always cocked about 15 degrees to the left to fit in the thing.

From the digging I have done this appears to be a good starting deal for someone, I might do it, still deciding if I wish to own another toy right now.
These appear to have center and rear LSD in stock form. Fairly strong, it needs a window, belts, and shocks. In the long run reality always wins. |

Malcolm Davies got a solid coupler from SloBoy Racing for the center. He needs to get used to it now. |

Owning is almost always cheaper than renting. (in my experience at least)
You pay a premium for renting because it rids you of prep and maintenance effort and allows you to show-up and flog a car that has been readied by other people, for money. Ask yourself why you wanted to rent in the first place. If it was because you got tired of dealing with the hassles of owning a rally car, don't buy this or you'll regret it quickly. Keith the only time I have ever rented was to abuse a car at a rally school where it did not make since to ship mine thousands of miles. "Cheaper then Renting" is a provocative headline not a statement of intent, fact or practice.
Jay I hope your old man grabs it - I am going to pass at this time, I decided not to jump back into the sport now. I noticed that Road Race Engineering has prep'ed a few of these, they also built my old 323GTX, decent guys to work with, they have bits that fit these things for sale. In the long run reality always wins. |

From past comments you have made it seems like you don't really like owning rally cars, although you do like flogging them. Who here *doesn't* fit that description? Owning a rallycar is about the most dysfunctional thing you can do. Spend bank building and maintaining so you can drive it like you hate it....The challenge for me has always been to take more outta the car than the car takes outta me. Since the damn thing demands blood sacrifice before any meaningful work can be done to it, this is not always an easy challenge...

A little late getting back to the conversation...
1G refers to first generation. The rally community might tend to call them Misterbichys, but the rest of the world knows them as DSM for Diamond Star Motors. Stock AWD 1G DSMs have a viscous center diff that can be temperamental if fluid levels are not right. Some people choose to weld them up, which can cause axle failure on street cars, but this might be a good idea for a rally car. Later models got the "4-bolt" rear end with a viscous LSD. If the rear driveshafts mate to the pumpkin with 4 bolts apiece, it's probably got the LSD back there. Otherwise, you're talking open all around. A novel idea would be to pull the front driveshafts, plug the holes, and run RWD without a restrictor in Grp 5. Even so, the stock rear end doesn't hold up to that kind of abuse for very long. Would make for a fun experiment, that's for sure. I've also seen a video online where some guy fabbed up a new bellhousing to mate the Poopra transmission to the 4G63, which would potentially open up a number of possibilities for RWD gearing and shenanigans. They are heavy for their size, and you're going to be cramped in there being 6'3", but it could make for a wild ride. If I didn't have a Galant right now, I might go for just such a project.
