I really like your 240. It's very nice!

I started co-driving in a 240, and I was admiring the build of yours at the Lewiston Parc Expose. I especially liked the R Sport dash -- brought me back. Agree with everyone on the spacer issue. Also noticed you're running Virgos. I think they're ok, but in my my experience they're pretty soft and can bend. The strongest stock Volvo wheels I've found are the 240/740 diesel wheels. They are multi-spoke (maybe 21?) with polished spoke faces and black spokes.

Yeah but Virgos (volvo 240 turbo wheels for the unfaithful) are everywhere and commonly had for 10-20 bucks. They are hard to resist. With a little searching the volvo 10-spoke "Sirius" wheels are pretty common. I believe they are what big bad John Lane has on his beast. They have a little more room for brakes, too.

Right now, the plan is to use the smallest spacer that will work and make them a part of the hub so we aren't relying on the stock studs, much like Patrick described. I think we're also going to try to have some spare hubs since they're relatively inexpensive.

Christian, glad you like that car. I didn't know you started in a 240. As Al pointed out, the Virgos are common and can be had little money. I'll take a look around and see if I can find some "Sirius" and those diesel wheels. We're definitely planning on being at 100AW and hopefully all of the bugs will be worked out by then.

Yeah, my first rally co-driving (I think) was Olympus 1998, where Bill Malik and I came 9th OA. Before that, I spun wrenches a few events when Bill was driving with Farina O'Sullivan. We ran together for about 5 years, and I think the first time I ever co-drove in anything _other_ than a Volvo was 2002.

Alright, I am a long time lurker without a rallycar...

It was my understanding that Virgos had less brake clearance that 740/940 RWD Volvo wheels.I can't find any hard numbers right now though. You may have already looked into it, but I thought I'd throw it out there. A very common 740/940 wheel is the Omega. I'm not sure if it's strong, but it at least looks like a rally wheel:

Ben Kaplan sells 3" studs which are are direct replacements for normal stock 240 studs.

"These 3" studs are made to press into the factory hubs.

Machined with the factory knurl pattern and brake hat shoulder.

lugnut quick start helps insure a positive non-cross threaded engagement.

Machined from 4340 Alloy and heat treated post machining for maximum strength and Magnesium Phosphate Plated for corrosion prevention.

A 3" studs allows for upto a 34mm spacer to be used, due to variations in wheels design and and hub thickness it is recommended to check for proper thread engagement of the lug nuts before driving. "

If they're still M12 then they're a wasted effort.
Come on ask the question: why do virtually every brand move up to 14mm when they get serious?
$9 per stud for something no stronger, merely longer......

Not a very good deal when we know we can get 5 M14 studs anywhere for from $9.75 to $11.50
At that price a re-drill of the hub is worthwhile to get the right bore for the knurl. (Not like you're really going thru hubs at some drastic rate so modding a hub once is an OK expenditure, you'll keep it a lomg time) but you ARE stressing the studs on a rally car vastly more than the OEM designers calculated so a BIG increase in strength is something that rally guys need that children playing in a fucking parking lot in second gear in a fucking Volvo WAGON mommy-mobile simply have no conception of.....and it shows.

Well the thing is we HAVE to stick with things we're pretty damn certain are going to be strong enough for any reasonable person.
There CAN'T be repeats of wheels falling off which we've seen in the past on some Volvos out here, and now with Ian's.

That just sucks too bigtime...
