SS1 and SS5 which were both runs through tree farm Team SS1 SS5 Doug Shepherd-Karen Wagner 5:30 5:17 Josh Wimpey-Jeremy Wimpey 5:14 5:11 Doug's intercom was not working on SS1 and it was working on SS5. The margin between the two cars was only 9 seconds at the end of the day. If his intercom had continued to be faulty it is likely the Wimpeys would have won the rally. |

I seem to recall someone suggesting Jemba notes were worth ~2 sec/mile... The comparison of Shepherd's ss1 an ss5 times seem to support that.
2 sec/mile is a chunk of pace that is hard to get with pure bits and pieces! First Rally: 2001 Driver (7), Co-Driver (44) Drivers (16) Clerk (10), Official (7), Volunteer (4) Cars Built (1), Engines Built (0) Cages Built (0) Last Updated, January 4, 2015 ![]()

But some people counter-suggest that for the vast majority of all North American drivers more effort at improving basic driving skills and more time is worth maybe 10, 20 seconds a mile. And some people suggest that the desire to mimic the accouterments of what they watch on TV costs a lot more than anything else and stunts to drive to learn to drive harder on sight, and by using crutches, they will remain cripples. Most people that eventually get better, get better when they are forced to.. Subject "most people" verb; GET BETTER. Being told what is coming is hardly being forced to "get better". Oh well, lets all pretend we "need' notes cause we're soooooooooooo fast. Oi..... John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! ------------------------------------------------------- You know, when it comes to bowling, I tell people, until you are averaging a 140-150 consistently with a straight ball, there is no need to throw a curve ball with finger tips like the pros do. On the other hand, the friends, family, and teammates that are the best bowlers are the ones that pretty much skipped straight balls and went straight to the fingertip balls. In fact, I'd say that similar situations can apply to many sports. You don't see basketball players starting out wearing shoes from the 70s. You use every available resource and improvement to the sport that is available to be better. There are two important factors to getting better in anything. Experience and natural talent. Typing all that makes me think I probably should get some RSSPs for my car. Grant Hughes |

I'd love to see you quantify the 10-20 sec/mile for the 'vast majority.' In the Tennesee example we're comparing Shephard and Whimpy - both fairly quick and consistent drivers. (Shephard, arguably, an accomplished 'blind' driver) We've seen from both Richard and Block that the top of the pack in North America isn't THAT far off the global pace - as a rule. (as in not 10+sec/mile) All that said, I don't think anyone disagrees that there is a lot of room for improving basic driving skills across the board - I just don't see why that can only happen in the absence of notes. Tangentially, I think photographers would benefit from learning to develop film and make prints in a darkroom - but that is long gone from most photography programs (And, relatively irrelevant to working in the business today) > Oh well, lets all pretend we "need' notes cause > we're soooooooooooo fast. I've never said I need notes because I'm fast. I have said that notes make me faster and, more importantly, safer. Morison, no time to argue about just how many minutes-20-30 often that the supposed fastest in North America are, but they are nowhere near the top----Blocks times are just middling amongst the "Buy-your-ride" and he's so far always been under super-rally after 2 stages till his latest leap forward all the way to twice the number of stages before flipping when he managed to make it all the way to SS4.
His times prior to flipping were nothing stellar. But that's not the point here. Just like there is an absurd over-emphasis on an advanced braking technique called Left foot braking when we all see that the vast majority of drivers cannot and do not execute even simple straight ahead braking very well, this notes fixation is an advanced technique that most, nearly all, could and probably should not obsess about at the modest levels of 'attack" that nearly all drive at... In the camera world it's not akin to developing and printing, its more like people back in the day "needing" a top level Nikon and a massive range of lenses from fisheye to 350mm telephoto to essentially shoot snapshots of little Junior eating his birthday cake at Grandma's. It's just part and parcel of the well know American penchant for buying equipment far beyond skill level and need, sorta like many 'gearheads" with huge rollaway tool chests who need step stools to reach the top levels just to cahnge oil or maybe brake pads.... And just because it is a commonplace thing doesn't mean its sensible or right. Some might point to the decline in the numbers of Swedes reaching WRC level which has happened at the same time as the use of Jemba type notes became the norm, while Finland next door doing route book events continues to, with half the population, generate an endless stream of people who are flat fast and who go onwards. But people want something to do, and despite numerous examples of people driving along with co-drivers reading the wrong page, it's on TV so it just has to be right.
