Tow Vehicle time
May 14, 2010 04:42PM
So, I know everyone has likely kicked the shit out of this dead horse before, but here goes.

I am a cheap motha...and I can barely keep my existing fleet of crap running, but I need a sevice vehicle.

So, I see things like 94 GM uHaul box trucks with gas 454's for $1500. 94 diesel uhaul box trucks for $2500, newer 6cyl vans for $2500.

I'd like to spend less than $3000...function is more important than looks...and mileage would be awesome.

Does anyone tow with a 6cyl?

Never buy, always rent, cheaper unless you're doing 6 events a year for 10 years. (for pulling a trailer)

If you're true to your cheapskateness, get a tow dolly (or better, rent one) and pull it behind a tiny truck or SUV.

For every combination you consider, say out loud "Zimmer tows his Subaru Impreza to events WITH a Subaru Impreza". And that f-er has done more rallies than all of us combined. So if you want to go rally, you're going to have to be super-pro before you need more than he had.

(Sold my trailer last week, selling van next, driving to events now!)

And the thing everyone fails to mention is that Randy's tow Impreza isn't exactly stock. Nor is it particularly wise, towing 4000' behind 3000' on a ballhitch.

Macho, yes. Possible, yes. Smart? Not really.

Two reasons not to rent:

1) events in Canuckistan may be a little more difficult to deal with at the border in a pile of things that say U-Haul or have rental documents saying VEHICLE CANNOT LEAVE UNITED STATES. Living in Northern New England, you have four Canadian nationals within a day's tow (although Pines and Perce Neige are pushing it from Mike's place), several more regionals if you can decipher French.

2) Where is Mike going to sleep when those other two Saab 99 project cars arrive later this month?

OK, a third reason, this thing is likely going to serve as Mike's garage for a while. winking smiley

Buy this 92 Suburban I have here with FULL towing package---everything, even the AC works, 1200 miles on new tires, and 89,000 miles.. But its a wee bit more but nice...

Too nice maybe...
bear in mind that I drove the green 96s the length of I-90 in 3 days and 3 hours solo
So can't wine it's TOOOOOOO FAR AWAY whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I mean are you from Maine or a whining Masshole?

Maybe tow back---agree about the dolly thing---a nice rust free Xratty for Tavarich Andriy up in Ontatiostan, make some dough toward the gas...

DO IT!!!

( I got it after it sat when my dad died 5 years ago, and for the last 5 years he wasn't driving a lot...previously it pulled a 30 something foot Airstream, ALL reciepts are there----->winking smiley

We rented a 2010 Uhaul 6cylinder F150 and trailer, drove up to Tall Pines in it. The thing was pretty smooth, got decent gas mileage (12.5mpg) and dont remember seeing anything in the contract nor did the rental place not allow it. I typically tow with my 4lt 6cyl. 4runner and am happy with it. Two complaints: Eats brakes/rotors fastish and I end up putting well over 20K miles on it.

Get at least a heavy half ton PU or 3/4 ton van. Vans are pretty cheap used. A small V-8 will work but a mid sized 350 or 360 cu inch is a good compromise.

Towing with too small a rig is no smarter than welding over brake kleen. Not only do you not have room for spares or crew but it is stressful and dangerous. If you are ever involved in a wreck the attorneys will own your miserable hide whether you are at fault or not.

YES !!! A Suburban is a great choice. I towed 8,000lbs of SeaRay with a 1/2ton 1976 Suburban and we have a 1999 'Burb for a shop vehicle and Brent to pull his race car with now.

Bwahaha. I should talk to you sometime about pulling a SeaRay Sundancer 260 with an F150. All was well until the boat + trailer started dragging the truck backwards down a hill. Surge brakes don't work going that direction, see.

That was the most clenching moment I ever had in a vehicle until Lars and I went off at OTR last year.

There is, of course, nearly no limit to this line of reasoning. winking smiley

"You tow a trailer behind a mid size pickup? That's crazy, I use a Suburban. You need more mass."

"You tow a trailer behind a Suburban? That's crazy, I use a 3/4 ton diesel. You need more mass."

"You tow a trailer behind a 3/4 ton on a hitch? That's crazy, I use a dually fifth wheel. You need more mass."

"You tow with a dually? That's crazy, I use a motor home. You need more mass."

"You tow with a motor home? That's crazy, I use a tractor trailer. You need more mass."

Every one of the above has been use to justify equipment purchases in this sport.

Cheers,
Anders
