Did Volvo ever win the WRC Manufacturer's Title? Just curious if and when. I keep hearing about these bitchin' Volvos, but I am just not seeing the results.

How's that for legalese? No, and they didn't win many WRC rounds EVER, far less than the might Saab 96 V4. It is the near total domination of Swedish National Class or "Group H" since about the early 90s with attendant high overall places....and just a cold eye over the car and engine specs to see that the cars just flat work, especially on the medium fast to very fast roads all US and Canajian organiser like to use for stages... The cost benefit ratio of the rwd Voplvos is far and away better than any other car for competitive placing in Sweden.. I have a magazine here talking about build costs and at the time the best 2,0 CIH Opels in Sweden were doing about 208-210 bhp. 230-235 bhp from a Volvo at the time cost approx 1/3 the build cost. Look at engine placement. Look at bore---lots of room for big valves.... Power is ultimately limited by intake vqalve size.... Ford has. But that doesn't make the Focus the best rally car ever.
Just because a vehicle has won a WRC title, or even event, doesn't mean that they are well suited to be a rally car, especially for a privateer. The only two exceptions to that are if you are cool with Open Light and Subaru and the Merkur. Grant Hughes |

Yeah but there were whole rally series for stock volvo 240 in Sweden, often with 50-80 entries the old guys tell me.
Plus how many WRC titles for VW or Honda? Anyhow, when I look in junkyards or craigslist, there aren't any Opels or Lancias. In the for sale list here, you will find a turbo volvo for free because I have too many of them in my driveway. |

With a few exceptions the Ovlov's aren't that good for Danish rallies though. Almost no gravel, and fairly slow twisty stages. Not particularly suitable for a somewhat long and heavy 240. One guy does really well though - he was brought up with rallying though. Whole family is involved. Dad's been rallying 240's for ever, little brother is rallying as well, and the guy used to co-pilot his dad. Mom is in the service crew :-). Put him on gravel with his 240 VOC, and he'll beat most of the Danish rally "elite", since they're used to tarmac mostly. Danish VOC website: http://www.volvooriginal.dk/ (danish only I'm afraid). Actually they DON'T... stock they're around 1250 kg.... and easily brought down due to all the crap that's in them. Volvo's group A race cars for circuit racing were below 1000 kg - more like close to 900 kg. Albeit that's with some trick body work - but with the rules you guys have for building (we're not allowed to lighten ANYTHING - body's to remain stock, no carbon fiber hoods or other parts, etc.), it shouldn't be too hard to come close to that. don't feed the troll
at first I thought this was actually a real question in a real thread, I bit just like the rest of you, but his 2nd post clearly shows he's only trying to get a rise out of people and have us try to argue with him or attempt to convince him differently even though he just doesn't care, the whole purpose was to create drama I know my own kind, I've done the same thing on another site asking about drag racing :p |

Problem is all you have to do is look up the start list for Olympus WRC in 1986, the historic last GpB event and also the last event that 2 famous cars Homologation ran out (International events are open to currently homologated cars and homologation runs out 5 years after the end of production. Opel Ascona B,the car that dominated Swedish rally from the mid 70ss thru the early 90s before it was dethroned as THE car to have ran out 31 December 1986 as did the mighty Saab 96---even though as we all know series production ended in Feb 1980, but Saab sold new "T-bilar" or competition shells thru 1981, so by this ruse they got an extra year. Now as we all know the answer to all the BIG Qustions was worked out by Deep Thought---a super powerful computer so big a planet had to be made to hold it, and after a 10,000 year running of the program the answer to Life, the Universe and EVERYTHING was found to be.................................................. 42. look up that Start List? OK let me help a bit: ![]() Look on the Rally Shield of that nice Saab 96 and what start number do you see? That's right.... PROOF! that the Saab 96 is the answer to all the big questions in life... So unsere Herr von Kessler ist im kessel! Of course he's going get all surly, but he shouldn't cause he has a pair of nice cars now, all he needs is good suspenders and maybe some hot cams for the 1900 16v..
