On my way to the rallycross today i hear my tires start an un-usual howl a few miles away from my desination. Figured it was just a change in surface/pavement/concrete.
so after my oil filter blows off during the first practice and i get 5 brand new quarts of oil all over the passenger side wheel well and such i get a new filter that fits 'properly' and new oil... do my runs. everything is 'fine'... i mean i sucked so it's fine right? lol now on my way home i aired up to 45 psi, as soon as i hit pavment, my tires are howling.. like a lot? i pulled off into a bus zone thingy to check em, and they're not low or anything... but holy crap the entire way from the fairgrounds in hillsboro to my place in salem they were just howling. ya know like when u take corners too fast and loose traction howling.. ya.. i pull into the garage and WHOA!!!! they're purdy flippin torn up now! like i lost a ton of tread! take the wheels off and see all the oil EVERYWHERE in the pass wheel well, wheel, brake system, so im gonna work on cleaning it up right now... but i don't get why they're so torn up? sorry, im no mechanic. but couldnt this maybe be an alignment issue? what would you guys guess Edited 2 time(s). it was both.. i thought maybe the oil affected it, but they both are pretty messed up. i guess it could very well be they just got worn out naturally. im just use to street tires and not this kinda tread. the alignment looks fine eyeballing it, and its even wear throughout the contact surface too.
edit: but would BF Goodrich AT's really howl like that when balding? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/26/2010 10:36PM by WorldHazard. |

ya... i thought about that after i left... eyeballing an alignment.. w/e.. would the oil have any effect on it?
just finished with cleanup for the night, and after rotating tires i do see a difference between the pass vs the drivers.. passenger is worn down more... kinda lame as i was gonna swap over my spares, but AGAIN.... my lugnuts are too fat for the wheels... any recommendation around pdx and the couv for a machine shop to enlarge the holes? |

BEFORE i left at least. as i drive the truck occasionally i never noticed anything out of the ordinary. i plan on gettin an alignment done now though. how often does a rally car want an alignment? more/less after every stage event? (if i can afford it, SURE!) |

Hmmm,
I drove a car w/ 1.5" toe-in and never heard them. you have 3"+ ?? Get an accomplice and a tape measure. Have the dumber one stick the tang into a tread groove on the forward edge of one of the front tires. Have the smarter one look under to see the tape isn't hitting stuff and then read the result on a groove on the other tire. Do the same thing on the back edge in the same grooves (this is important). Compute the difference. This will work fine for what you need to know now. You are looking for +/- 1/4" difference in the two measurements. If you have a large amount of camber, the two measurement heights need to be equal ie: 3" from the ground, front and back/both sides Once you do this, see why. Something is broken or re-installed badly. |
