HKS trans re-build
June 29, 2010 03:36PM
I just picked up an HKS dog box for cheap... needs re-build :-)
The kid was learning and down shifted 3rd to revrese! Blew reverse gear to pieces, but everything else looks OK.
So I need a reverse gear set and a bearing... call HKS USA..."We don't sell parts, you have to ship the transmission to us"... WTF?

Anyone ever delt with HKS?
Know anyone who works there?
Know the seceret telephone number to get to the guy who will sell parts?

This box will be awesome once I get the parts I need, and get the right final drive ratio in there...

Thanks for any help.

-Martin.

Martin find the Japonaise home page and see ig you can dig up the PN for the idler.
Strip the box and see if anything else is fucked up and order that at same time....

Know what the ratios are?
What final drive youse thinking about?

Thats a real shit sandwich to buy that gearbox and specially in that condition. Have you opened it up yet? You dont just "blow up" a gear and not have anything else go bad. Plus those HKS thingies are like everything else coming from Japan, made in China or Taiwan and very poor quality design and metalurgy.

Ok, now is this just the gearset or is it a complete box? If its just a gearset, you can see if the OE gears are compatible to those shafts.

I've already stripped the box, and besides a few gouges in the aluminum casing and one dent in the nice brass selector, there's no other damage.
I need:
- reverse idler gear and bearing
- reverse main/dog gear
- reverse counter gear

I've been on the Japanese web site, and had my wife look around (she's Japanese) they don't even have contact info... apparently she found a page where you coudl fill out a form to get a manual.. fill the form, and fax it in, then if they have a manual for what you need (Turbo, boot controler, suspension, trans etc), they'll send COD, only to Japanese addresses. I'll try that, and maybe I'll get access to parts that way, but I'm not holding my breath.

Gear ratios are:
1st 2.600
2nd 1.984
3rd 1.547
4th 1.245
5th 1

Thinking of whatever final dreive ratio is right, provide I have it, or can get it without breaking the bank.

I think I have 4.08 in now (woerk OK with stock ratios), 4.11, 4.32, and maybe 4.62... not sure which ones are right for teh diff/casing I'm using as they differ and have differnt bolt size, so have to do some investigation.

Call Alex at DentSport, they had a few of Ramana's old boxes kicking around the shop and may have some parts or a line on spares.

Hey Martin, just clued (remembered you're running a 240), Ramana's dog setups were Mitsus not Nissans, so I think I'm barking up the wrong tree. Bill (also of DentSport) runs a crazy batmobile-esque 240 time attack car so there might be some ideas there.

I am pretty sure Bill runs a T5 with a dog gear kit in the 240.

Have you seen his Montero with the 2JZ turbo setup?

Well obviously the T5 is the near ideal choice for a turbo 2 liter car, and I'll tell ya'll since I do have a NICE tight close ratio set: the ratios are vastly more important than the selection , or locking method.

All you have to do to put this into the correct perspective is
remember synchros are brakes and think "howz much worx duz a synchro haz to work slowing the next gear to let it engage?"

And then think: howz fast would a dog box let you slam gear with a 4.2 first and the next say 1.6? Huh?

Martin are there any loose bellhousings for the SR20?

Yeah but I think the Japonaise being inscrutable Asians, do different bellhousing bolt ups on about every block it seems.

So what we need is a SR20DET block bellhousing that could be modded like that run of Volvo ones I did with Kevvie.

So I think I've found a source for my busted reverse gears. We'll see if it pans out. Would love to have this box in for NEFR Max-Attack!!

I finally got around to cleaning things up on the weekend... when we took it apart we were really only interested in finding out what parts were needed and didn't pay close attention to too much else.

So when I'm washing parts I get to the zip-loc bag that had the stuff from inside the tail stock section... before we got to the broken gears. WTF... there's another gear in here! Turns out it's a 6 speed, not 5 speed, the kid I bought it off didn't even know :-)

So John, what final driver ration should I be using?
Gear ratio's
1 - 2.6
2 - 1.984
3 - 1.547
4 - 1.245
5 - 1.00
6 - .806

Note: I don't want to be geared crazy low, as I'm doing Targa in Septand will need to see 200km/h +

Stock SR20DET bell housinsg should be available, lots of srifters blow them up. But I think they include the front 1/2 of the gear housing so might not adapt well to T5... You could always chop off and weld to an existing T5 adapter I guess...

Martin I dun'tta know how much grunt your motor makes but I always consider those things to be the equal of the YB Cossie, since they were done in turbo as a Missan's answer i I know the specs etc on the motor well so I'll assume it makes some yank---if not when the boat arrives I'll make sure you get a Cossie T3, then that fawker will haul---

anyway, I would go NO shorter than say 4.53/4.56 or first will start being too short to be really fun

Look at the combo we're using in Xratties and Volvos: 2.95 First in the T5 x 4.3 in the Toileeta axles we're using gives us a nice 12.68 overall in first, and 4.3 in 1:1 4th----that means 7000 rpm on a 64 cm gravel tire= 123 mph or about 200km/hr

and we still have some sorta 5th either a Cossie 0,82 or GM 0,72 or a Moose-angst 0,63

With a 4.56--which I think just happens to be a pick up ratio--but knowing those shifty Japanese they use a H-190 or whatever the fuck that had different bolt holes than the IRS thing by 1.7mm and M 11.5 x 1 threads--tricky bastids--- and 1:1 5th and 7000 rpm with 64 cm tire you'd be at 184.3 km/hr and 6th would be 222.7 km/hr

Your diff is an R190 or R200 or what?
Doing the math after 1 cuppa tea and got me to stinkin maybe justa Subie 4.44 or even Nissan pick up 4.37 cause with asphalt don't you use little dumpy little tires?

What's the plan for tire overall diameter for asphalt??

As for bellhousings.. no need IF you get this thing fixed---unless you want to have a nearly as good back up box....

R-200 Diff

Currently 200RWHP

Rally tires 650mm dia

Tarmac tires 635 - 645 mm dia (haven't decided on size yet)

Plan on 300rwhp for targa

Ratios I have available: 4.08, 4.11, 4.32, 4.62... some of these migt not fit my clutch pack LSD... they have different sized ring gear blotsnfor different carriers. Won't know until I get in there, won't go there if I don't have to.

I'll get this thing fixed.. in tiem for NEFR, who knows...
