SHOW ME THE RIDES!...aka WTB sorted Gr. 2 car
July 24, 2010 01:53PM
So as most of you know the Van Hell Yeah FX decided to show us its rendition of Fire in the Hole. One hell of a loss but in ways it can also be thought of as a relief and a chance to start fresh. Red Rocket Rally has high aspirations and we are not going to let this setback get in the way of our dreams of Wild West and more importantly MaxAttack! at LSPR.

So that means we are in the market for a well sorted Gr. 2 car. Currently Brian is in discussion about the ex Havas piloted civic. Other possibilities include Peter Barne's Sentra or possibly renting. We have been trolling classifieds but your options run out quick there. No to the Acura, no the the Peugeot. So I was hoping to post something up here and see what crawls out of the woodwork. Lurch you ready to part with that lump you call a protege?

While something on the left side would be ideal, travel to the east isn't out of the question.

Thanks guys
POR

I did a similar search a few months back and ended up buying a G2 Sentra from California.

Ben's Focus looks like a good candidate. I might have bought his car if I knew it looked so good, LOL!

I'd be careful of buying anything from Canada - it may not be easy to get a modified, street-registered car through US Customs without a lot of hassle.

Good luck with your search!

Yes Ben's focus is in the running...but, but, its a focus

Thanks for the tip on the canuck cars. Plus i think they run on maple syrup and they charge extra for that ish around here.

There are certainly some good candidates on the market but it seems though if one asks more options start to become available. Or so I hope.

Ben's Focus was rolled at ID, but I think it's fixable.

Is that comment based on experience or are you just guessing?

I know several people who have brought fully prepared across the border the other way and unless I am mistaken the (ex?) Herodos RX-7 actually came from Calgary as a caged rally car.... but I think there is also more to that story.

No guessing here.

Yes, I have recent (Jan 2010) experience bringing a race car into the US from Canada.

For an imported vehicle that will be registered in the US (such as a rally car!), US safety and emissions standards apply. US Customs will be checking for those things. Things like airbags, smog equipment, etc. Most race cars don't have that stuff. Engine mods only make it more complicated.

It wasn't too much of a problem for me to import a CRX road race car that wouldn't be registered and wouldn't be driven on public roads, but the Customs agent let me know that he still could have made my life difficult if he wanted to. I actually had to make a case for this road race CRX to prove to Customs that it would never be registered in the US and would be used only for club-level racing.

I'm not saying that a rally car from Canada couldn't be legally imported into the US, it just seems like a big hassle to do it especially when their are easier alternatives within the US.

Anyway, that's been my experience. I'm just trying to help Patrick and Brian avoid a potential pitfall.

My vote is for the Honda. I am on my 3rd rally on the 97 Civic that I built and could not be happier with it. The great thing with the Hondas is that they are upgradeable because of the parts interchangeability with other models.

On an early car like you are talking about I would keep an eye on the front radius rods(possibly upgrade them to a heim jointed design). On the rear I would reinforce the subframe as it can rip off the chassis in very rough rallies. Everything else is up to how you like it/how much do you want to spend/how fast do you want to go.

Pat that may have something to do with it. What i have heard about the car from Jason is also a huge part of it though.

I teched that Civic at OT a couple of times. Obviously a very capable car in the right hands. Very clean build. I would add some reinforcement to the main hoop.

I am aware of an AWD Talon that might be for sale also. Hasn't been seen for a while but is very quick DMS shod car.

Fair enough - I just know a lot of people in Canada shy away from bringing cars up from the states when the 'process' isn't that tough. With your recent experience, clearly taking a car south isn't as easy.
