maybe Towing a shell from Portland OR to WI

Well, there's a super-strong possibility that I might be flying out to Portland, OR to pick up a CLEAN shell of a Toiletta Commode. Everything but engine/transmisison/exhaust/steering wheel.

The car:

Easiest thing would be to find an engine/trans that can survive the drive home, and just drive it. But that being mostly a pipe dream, I'll probably need to fly out, and tow it back.

So, what are some of my best options? I was thinking to just load it on a Penske truck (provided we can find a dock to load it from), and unload it at my work, and trailer it the 25 miles back home.

Or, rent a pickup and a tow dolly.

Or, rent a pickup, buy a tow dolly, and sell it when I get home.

Or, borrow a pickup, drive it out, rent a dolly, and drag it back.

Or, find someone in WI that just bought a truck in OR and needs it driven back for them.

Any good suggestions or contacts?

Yep.

If you fly out, I'm 2 miles from Sea-tac airport.

Even with the gas its probably all round cheapest to drive out. Camp, stop in here for R&R and yummie Cantonese cooking and turn around. You can do it in 4.5 days.

However you get here, rent a U-Haul trailer in Portland (or surrounding area, including southern Washington). Do the one-way rental back to WI. Last time I checked, U-Haul trailers weren't too much more expensive than rented tow dollies. Of course, you'll need a truck that can tow a trailer and car.

Just curious now, but my man is hauling a rolling shell for a Toiletta Corolla, why in the world would he want to haul a fawking huge heavy trailer instead of a nice light tow-dolly.
I've done a couple of full across the country trips, and 800-2400 mile trips out there going to rallies) hauling my Saab on a dolly, worked fine...

Why a monster trailer? Cause they ARE monsters.

Why not use a car carrier service? Would probably be around the $500 range to ship it? Call up a company like Reliant and get a quote. Sure it takes a week or more to get to you, but you don't have to do the drive. You won't even have to fly out there.

You would have to pay a bit extra if the car won't go on the ramps under it's own power though (i.e. no engine), but they can accomidate you on that.

I was looking to get my VW shipped when I bought it in NJ back to MI. But they had some dumb rule that you couldn't pack it up with a bunch of spare parts to ship it.

Nice specimen.

Buy John's Suburban and rent a tow vehicle.

Distance, and volume of traffic dahrlink, distance and volume.

It's basically a 4000-mile round trip. Worst-Case-Scenario, At 10mpg, and $2.75/gal, that puts me at 400 gallons, and $1100. That's if I use the van, which gets 10mpg loaded, unloaded, tailwind, or headwind, with no A/C and no radio. That's just fuel, not including dolly/trailer rental. That's more than the car!

With no engine/trans in the car, just a tow dolly should still be just fine to use, yes?
Or will it be too light for the dolly and require a trailer instead? Which will require a vehicle with a brake controller.
I think that the car/dolly would weigh less than 2000 lbs, considering the rusty one I've already got weighs only 2463 with me in it, and still has full interior and engine and transmission.

For that kind of distance, I think it might be better to have something at least 3/4 ton, otherwise I won't be able to use the overdrive for fear of ruining the transmission, and any fuel savings would be lost because of the higher revving.

What you need to do is get a not-rusty ovloV 240 for $400, ZZZZAAAPPP a hitch on it, steal a tow dolly, and tow the AE86 (yo!) back with that, then sell the 240. A bare Commoda shell isn't going to weigh much (1500 lbs maybe?). I'd tow it with my Legacy, but I'm on the wrong coast.

You could maybe even flat tow it!

still don't think it'd be over 1000 though, along with the fact that there would be no time lost from work either, once you start adding in taking time off, the cost of a flight, food/gas/hotel/rentals/etc just seems to me that shipping would be the better option
