Cheap 1971 Ford Capri Race Car in Seattle Area
August 09, 2010 11:41AM
I've road raced against this very car (actually, it was in a different class but on track at same time). Not the fastest thing on track but I'm thinkng it might be a good base for a rally or rallycross car. Light, small, RWD, 4cylinder, old skool, etc....

http://www.icscc.com/forums/showthread.php?1299-FS-1971-Ford-Capri-FIP-or-ITB-3000

Does it get the JVL stamp of approval??? smiling smiley

What's not to like--except the price.

I just happen to have a head that would wake that bugger UIP!, All alloy, 16V says FORD COSWORTH on it and it'll bolt right on to that 2,0 bottom end.....

Problem with most road racing cars, especially IT classes is that the roll cages are garbage, and would require a complete re-do to pass rally scrutineering.

No one with 1/2 a brain is interested in rally-ing a Capri. The old Cheech and Chong
Kamikaze punch line is right in line... "Are you out of your fucking mind??" Have you
thought about replacement bits for it? No? Good fuckin' luck...

Oh, before you think I have no idea what I'm talking about, I have 3 Capris, a '73
with a 302/T5/9", a '74 with a 2.0L soon to be T5, and 8" Ford with 4.11:1 gears,
and a '76 2.8L which will get the 2.0L rear end.

Here's my '73...

Good point, Steve. I already have a rally car (a cookie-cutter Japanese car). I just posted this in case somebody was interested in something in the "historic" category. I figure anyone campaigning this would need a subscription to Hemmings Motor News for spare parts.

BTW, you have a sharp looking Capri.

I hate to say it, but I'm with JV on the availability of replacement parts,
specifically, sheet metal, for rally cars, and a front fender for a Capri will
cost about the same as a complete XR4Ti. The Capri suspension is not all that
good for rally, it's basically an XR in tension. With really short track arms...
They Make good road course cars, without the rear ARBs, and with tightly shimmed
differentials, as the Atlas rear ends Quaife is cubic dollars and the 2.8is are
just about unobtainium at this point...

huh just put what ever motor you want 4 link the back with a toyota rear end make
your parts available it would be stupid to try and make it hard on your self.

whats wrong with the suspention? the same as escort! I think those guys work that
little beam better than I could ever drive.

I would just hate to replace doors and fun stuff like that but other than body
everything else is cake walk.

love my capri I do have a friend that would love to show me how to copy the doors in fiberglass.

ps damn john I want that!!!

Fuken what ever ... You guys drinking the kool aid they brew up north still...

It depends on where you live ... "I" ..."Me" could race a Capri or a Chevette or a Datsun Z MUCH easyer then a XR4Ti ....Why ... Theres much more of these cars around me then a XR4Ti ...

YOU "GUT" A GODDAMN XR4Ti TO RACE IT ..YOU REPLASE THE REAR END TRANS AND MOST OF THE MOTOR ON A XR4Ti to race it ...???????????.....As you do with MOST cars ..But your cool and doing it right if you GUT A XR and replace EVEYTHING to race it .. But your a morron around here if you gut EVERTHING and replace it in another car ........Well.........??? ......WHY......????

A Capri is a Escort you guys piss your pants over just longer ... I see Chevettes and Zcars most days around here driving on the road ...And two Chevettes in the junk yard and a mess of Zcars right now ....NEVER see a XR4ti .......EVER......!!!!!!

(Unless I look in my own car stash and theres three XR4Ti's... The only dam three I ever see ... Sorry I lied... Theres one real trick XR4Ti in town I had my hands in some time ago...)

And I own four Capri's ... Ones almost at rally ready ...Another just started ..Two Zcars are at the testing stage.. And one coming out of the box to start a build ... All three Zcars are from guys who have won champenships in the states and could of picked anything to drive ...One of these hot shoes gave Pastrana a run for his money .. But would be hammered as a morron around here if they said Zcar ...

You gut most cars to race them ... !!!!!!!!!

Racers are sheep and do what the one in front of them do ..I am a shop owner and a life time car builder and this Volvo and XR4 ONLY attaude is killing the sport as bad as the Subaru only attaude you all hate so much on SS.com.... I could bring real good info to the table here vast amount of time in gear box and so on ..But to fight the "Northern zombie heads" is a waste of my time ...

Yes Volvos and XR4Ti are good starting points to do a car ... So are Zcars ,,Chevette's ..VW Scirocco and a lot more ... Yes I can see the point of the Volvo as in a good strong car to get you on stage soon and easy very rare thing in the car world ... The XR4Ti is bull shit it has to be gutted just like must cars to race it ..

You guys are so off on some of your point of view around here is sad ...

Flame away...

Have a good day

David

I rallied a 74 Capri MKII for a couple of years back in the 90's in the old continent, it was a fun car, but it was a handful, it behaved nothing like an escort. It had to much corner entry understeer that then would turn into exit oversteer. On paper it sure looked good with just under 900kg, initially with a 2L pinto and then an atmo YB from a sierra, but lawd all might it couldnt be farther from being a well balanced machine. These things are better left for circuit racing.

David, you need to learn to read better---what ever are you ranting about "gut it and replace most of the motor?
Of course you "gut" any car if gut means to clean out the interior...

I don't know more what you're talking about..

I'd build a Capri before a Merkur myself. Great little cars, you would just have to buy a couple spares to park in the back yard. Here's a clip of probably the fastest one to see action in the US on gravel.

my flaming is that you are wrapping all of us up and including us with the views of a few simply because those few are the most outspoken, just because they squawk the loudest and the most often doesn't make them the majority, it just makes them the majority of the posts

in fact, some of us that have recently bought cars have not bought a volvo or a ratti, not because we have anything against them, but probably because it just wasn't what we wanted or wasn't our own personal style, though we are more than happy if someone else does buy one and use it, hell I wanted a 70's datsun king cab (which of course got poo poo'd) and the only reason I got the colt instead is because it was available for the right price and all the right priced king cabs were gone before I could get to them (though the colt is cool, and my roommate does mitsu so it'll prolly work out better anyway) whether it'll ever see a rally is another thing :p

Gee Merilee, way to move up the Christmas card list....
Some here who post most frequently have also built the most stuff, helped the most people get their cars going by a LARGE factor for more than 2 and a half fawkin decades, sweet-ums...
Squawk loudest?

have fun with your Colt.

And others have bought Datsuns and Celicas, and they still get all the help they ask for and more..way more.

What an absurd bunch of shit that just because they don't get an Xratty or Volvo that there's going to be shit flipped, beyond absurd, its fuckin insulting and ridiculous...particularly coming from somebody who has done only a little volunteering.

you go, girl.
