There was a doctor I think that used to rally one back east in the late 80's, Seems like he won an event once, not sure if it was overall or class win.

I have. Sold it to and it was ran a few more times by John Conley and Donny Conley. Don't do it.
It's a car that would be fun at rallies that don't exist in the US anymore. Like 45-50 MPH top average speed stages that were tight and twisty.
The twin stick was cool and it had good power to weight ratio but was a huge pain in the ass to find parts for. And definitely not worth it.
Volvo 240 or Merkur is even better.

Nope. Not that I could ever find. I'd looked at them and they're even harder to find in decent condition than the early 80s ones.

Not exactly the same as the Gen 1 DSM stuff. 4G61t engine, only available for one year, 1989, no gearbox options, no final drives, no diffs, and if it's the same shitty rear suspension as the Gen 1, shitty rear suspension.
Add to that that there were very few of them made, 1500 or so total.

A 4g63 will drop right in, super easy swap. Then you can use the 1g fwd tranny that has a lot of parts for it. This really is a fun car, when i had one i really enjoyed it.

Mike Bosch ran one a few times, but not the turbo version. He's got three of them. One that's been converted to awd (not finished), one that's been a variety of options and I still don't think he's settled on the final version (this is the one he's run at Mt Hood, and maybe elsewhere), and one that's a plain stock daily driver. Todd Lengacher has two of them, one that's a daily and the other is a running awd 4g63 conversion, though still not quite finished yet, we are hoping it will make the next rallycross, or possibly the last one of the year.

I had a rally friend that had swapped Mirage for a while as a street car. He said the torque steer was horrible! Not to mention it was still driven from the wrong place. He moved to a real Silvia and now I think is back in AWD with a WRX but he's also back in CO.

Seems like lots of effort to get a vile car to have a vile set of ratios and probably an open diff..

Doesn't anybody care to have good ratios in the box and serious final drives and decent LSDs? (without paying $4000-6000)

I thought long and hard about this one about five years ago. It really is a drop in swap with the Diamondstar stuff. Small, light hatch with beaucoups power. I'm sure you could bolt on the suspension as well. Oh well, just one of many ideas, and it wasn't in the cards. Not a lot of hatch shells.

I wonder how many KP61 shells are still around talking about the ultimate hatch. When I do universal Craigslist searches, it doesn't seem that they suffer from the Corolla tax.

Happy Labor Day workers!

Mitsubishi mirage / dodge colt. same car. the run of the mill models abound, its just the little things like the rear engine mount are required to get the turbo engine in directly. i just happen to have a said GT turbo car in my yard wasting away under the idaho sun.

yes

it's a dodge colt and a mitsubishi mirage and they are everywhere, I see them all the time, and they are cheap cheap cheap because the computers go bad and people replace tons of parts and can't figure out why they won't run right, and then sell them for $50-$350 dollars, get a good computer and bam you got a great commuter car that gets 35 mpg for nothing
