So... There is no medical support, nothing saying you are a competitor, it's not even a race, and you must use a POS to go 5,000 miles over central Asia? And yet you pay an entrance fee to get maps you don't even HAVE to use, visa's, and stickers?
I'd rather sort out my own visas, maps, and put the POS car and entry fee together and drive the route in a regular not going to blow up car. As the website says, you're just a tourist to the visited countries. Might as well do it like a tourist then. But oh well, to each his own. |

Or, you could pay the same amount to drive somewhat quickly up and down some dirt roads a handful of times, and you get Medical and Sweep support you don't even HAVE to use? And it's true, people hate POS cars. Remember that road race series that required you to use a POS? What a flop that was... ![]() |

Another group ripping off the Adventurists.
You see, it's very cool to be philanthropic (and green) in the UK these days. So people have taken to having these charity events like this. The Adventurists started like 10 years ago with the Mongol rally which was London to Ulan Baatar in under 1.0L cars (aka econobox.) It was all in the name of charity. As their event grew, they added on new start locations (so you could start from one of three cities that all ended in the same place), but with growth, comes pain. The government of Mongolia was tired of all these painted and decorated econoboxes getting abandoned across their countryside and in their cities. So the Adventurists find solutions, solutions that involve more money from participants, especially if they abandon the cars. Along comes this other company. Hey, that costs way too much now, let's change it a tad bit and try to capitalize as well. There's another group doing a similar thing with Rickshaws. In the end you are paying for a party at the beginning and at the end and to have a somewhat legitimized way to raise some money, really motivated people have been known to raise enough to cover their whole trip. The Mototaxi Junket or Rickshaw Run are still by far the coolest if you ask me. Apparently the Lemons guys originally wanted their series to be more of long distance TSD events initially. We have a plan for a Lemons style TSD to Panama City, but honestly, I don't have time these days to disappear for a few weeks. If the new business takes off, maybe I'll import some Rickshaws and start a North and Central American Rickshaw Run, though I wouldn't do it for charity because I just don't really care that much about philanthropy and non-profits that spend over 80% of their funding on trying to raise more funding. |

My absolute favorite Adventurist adventure that never became was their bouncy castle float across the English channel. They did do it successfully, but something caused it not to ever mature into an official event. Probably something to do with the thought of 100 bouncy castles full of people and generators (and probably booze) floating aimlessly in the channel...

agreed about the mototaxi and rickshaw but i still want to do the mongolian rally. i can't figure out if its better to know some of the language, or none at all and just go for it? (debating trying to learn a language) i still plan on doing the panama city thing or something similar sometime. |

The language thing would be a waste. So many countries, so much language variation. English is probably the best language to know for the Mongol Rally. The expensive part of the Mongol one or the OE one above is probably the visas. |

one of these days I want to do the Oregon 500 (or whatever it's called) 500 miles in a $500 car TSD, usually a 2 day event (or is it 500km, whatever) |

Hahaha, No, lol. I don't like the idea of stranded in 3rd world country. I'd rather go there in a reliable car, lol. Maybe it's not sporting enough to make life super hard on yourself... but I would just rather not. |

I'd like to that as well, and I have a $300 car I bought 7 years ago, that still runs... SteveL This is the point in the killing spree when you really should turn the gun on yourself |

and you haven't put more than $200 into it? from what I understand, you can put as much money into the car once the event starts, but have to keep it to $500 total and under until then so, if there's really easy stuff you can do en route, do the tough stuff first pretty sure they do it around april, I get an email, but I haven't had a chance to run it yet, even with an under $500 car available |
