Goldie?

Yours was the STI that you backed into a tree or something?
Yeah that was me, with my two friends that worked the next spot down the line. Whats up?

there was a kid there that had a gold BMW with an old decal on the side that read Goldie... im just trying to place a face with the name is all. not sure if we met, i had a white outback sport.

anywho- welcome to rally! if going rear-wheel why not build a mazda truck? a rear axle swap from a 4x4 Explorer will give you limited slip and rear disc brakes... plus mazda has a pretty good contingency. the dude that does sweep (Gary) with the big ford F-350 truck has a 5.0L Ranger, and was a ford mechanic for years. he's awesome with setting up trucks and has a shop in Honesdale PA. he's gonna help me build my truck this winter- then he's going to build another truck for himself at somepoint...

trucks are in dude. you can rally them AND haul a load of manure in the rear bed!

comming up to the rally sprint?

The ONE advantage is they are like Legos to a large degree.
Regardless of what the fans of them say---they are defending the cars to protect their egos---they are cheesily built, the sheet metal is THIN, the engine barely adeqaute in many details, the gearboxes---except the 6 -----speed utter garbage

Only the post 1999 brakes are OK.

All upgrades are very expensive.

The are the polar opposite of the idea of the Volvo or Xratty

They do GO good, at the Club or National level the performance is obviously good in any of the turbo models right back to the first Le-gassy---which is the car I recommend just causer they're longer...

But I want easier, cheaper better upgrades, and I want a basically stronger car and especially a stronger engine and gearbox.

But seems very few want really to learn from other people's costly mistakes, and you'll have fun, just budget for the inevitable things

There are some very good, and willing to be helpful Subie guys here, Chris Martin is here, didn't he win Ontario Regional Championship in his garage built---and JVAB suspended GC8?

Now, more details of what you got. Piccies man piccies!!

Don't buy into anybody's shit about buying a used rally car. Sure it is a quick fix, but study the regulations and build it. I knew nothing about rally, nor had had I ever turned a wheel in anger on gravel before my first event, all I knew was how to crash cars. I bought a tubing bender and notcher from Trick tools ( the JD Squared model). and set out on my own. The benefits of this (its a 91 crx) have been two fold-1. I learned the car inside and out and it is mechanically and structurally solid. 2. I grew, sorry am growing, with it and beginning to turn some good times with it. What JV (whom I don't Know) said is totaly true about eventually becomming "a rally perv". I can only tell you that this is an addicting venture. Talk to the people who kow, directly. Building your own cage, provided that you have a mig or tig welder, with equipement will cost you around 2000 dollars, versus having a pro do it for 3000 and up. Good luck, I'm currently helping a guy build a 95 celica. He's single with lots of money, god bless him. I have 3 kids so everything I do is on a budget. - The autochoad

thumbs upThanks for the insight, Sean.

John, the "Lego" thing is what is interesting to me, not the name. That and par availibility.

The car is a 99 outback sport with the 2.5 rd motor swapped in. I think it'll be fun thumbs up

Planning on seeing how fun in Red Hook on the 24th.

I'll post up pics as soon as I have some. Are any of youse guys goin to the NY rallysprint? I ought to be there, and would like to meet some of ya.

Good choice for a first car..Sube. No car has more developement for rally, parts are everywhere..not just in JVLs trunk. You can configure the car for FWD, RWD or AWD. Various engines and induction options and easy to get or borrow stuff at an event. Suspension, skidplates, brakes, upgrade paths all have many great options and prices from cheap to exotic.

As far as the turbo Lane vs Wabbit thrashing...didn't happen. John Lane is one of the true gentlemen left in the sport and was gracious enough to provide an old and dear friend a last ride in a rally car. That friend might have had potential medical and physical issues as well as not being able to keep up in the route book. Mr.Lane drove with that in the foremost of his thoughts (still won the event) . I don't know of anyone who has provided a more selfless act in our sport. Hero status in my book.

Give Lane some new tires and 2 or 3 events with Jason Grahn riding shotgun and then compare times....

Aw Gene, you'll make him blush. To counter that, he's also going out of his way to try and get me back out in the woods, so that counteracts some of his gentlemanly nature right there. If I ever manage to run a rally again you'll know who to blame.
