That all sounds right to me, thanks for brining it up. That all said, in the end, are drive trains other then AWD really such dead ends? I was under the impression that things like MaxAttack gave 2WD drivers more of a light at the end of the tunnel.

No. Just certain models can get super expensive. AWD typically being some of the most, but at least, like say with Subaru, there are really good factory boxes available.
FWD is typically more expensive than RWD for the internals. T-5 RWD box for example, you can get a fairly decent gear kit for $295. Final drives are also usually cheaper or at least more changeable with RWD.

2wd is not a dead end, it is where all hobbyist should compete in my opinion. However I understand the lure of seeing just how good you are against the top people is strong, especially when you are younger so AWD has a strong pull.

I asked my self this simple question: Can I create a top level car that is capable of winning its class in: A) Open cool smiley PGT, C) Gp2, D) Gp5, E) Production? Part two is would I want to drive the car if I did? I quickly decided I did not wish to spend time in PGT or P as the cars are a so limited in what you can do to them and how slow they are. Back to part one of the question, I can not create a top level open class car. I could buy one but not at an amount that made since to me in the dollars to fun ratio.

Today's top open class car is very sophisticated, they really do take time on AWD dyno's to tune, have center diff maps and so forth. With out a venue to test I am lost on this end of the program. Few people can build this type of car in their garage on weekends.

In 2wd however we all know what to do, get 180 to 250 HP matched to the gear box, a good limited slip, decent struts and go rally. Most everyone can build one of these.

derek, alot of that rung true to me.

The last thing I want to do is make a car where I am the complete limiting factor... I'd rather be able to drive the heck out of a lesser car then pedal a faster car cause I'm scared shitless. I am sure Id be scared shitless no matter what on my first few experinces, but hopefully that would pass thumbs up

The cost-to-fun ratio It seems would be better in such a car as well.. seems win/win.

Well, what do you mean dead end? If you want fierce competition, you're looking at 2wd max attack, or awd national SP. If you're looking for sponsors and free rides, you're in the wrong sport/country.

Oops, quick replied before noticing 2nd page...

Not really, I think the couple posts before basically said what I said. I really think that a 2wd -> SP spec car is a pretty reasonable progression, as then if you have a national close by, you CAN see how you rank with the top guys.

2WD is where the affordable competition is. SP is where it is if you can afford to campaign around the country and maintain the car. This would most likely need an MD, DDS, Doctorate, Wise financial planning, a master's, sponsors, a shoe company, great luck with an excellent paying job, or any combination of the above.

I bought 3 rally cars and built one...
The car I built was by far the best of my cars but I could not have built it so well with out the experience of owning the prior 3 cars.

THIS is some of the best advice I have heard in the old build vs buy argument.

Cool until you pound them, then the cranks start breaking in half.

Ask Chris Martin, with just JVAB Sooooper Bitchin suspension he made good results directly---until he ran out of engines.

Oh yeah? Hadnt heard to many complaints about that other then the usual rotary issues

Edit- also, I am looking more at these Volvos, the 240's. Any big issues I ought to watch for? any support with these things?

Only thing really bad is more a location thing: rust.
Plenty of support and rally specific things made right here in Seattle---in my trunk of the street-beater Xratty is the next set of modded Toyota pick up axles; just over there-----------> is a box of water jet cut adaptors for mounting big 4 piston Wilwood Forged Superlite calipers and off the shelf $40 buck circle track rotors 1.25" x 11.75", I make suspension and rear turret kits, 4 link kits, I make connecting rods at 160mm center to center so we can run pistons with 31,4mm comp height that are around 1 pound light per piston/rod combo per hole, a friend in Virginia, Lawrence Knox at Knox Motorsport (Contact Lawrence Knox or Billy Nolden for any inquiries.

Contracted with me to manufactur a run of 4130 CrMo steel billet camshafts so we could both have full circle blanks to grind crazy normal aspirated profiles on and retain original base circle......

Local Volvo perv Kevin Hawkinson aka Kevin HÃ¥kansson aka Kevvi Hoikansainalainenen and I did a short run of modded bellhousing to bolt in GM Borg-warner V8 T5 trannies so you can have an essentially unbreakable trannie with very good ratios and the oh so vital "room to grow". I make crossmembers and mounts for that...

Oh yeah--- tons-o-support.

I call the Xratty "the rightful successor to the 510" or "the 510 of the Naughties" but i call the 240 "America's Escort MkII" since it's just a bigger version chassi and motorwise than the fantastic Escort we never got---but it's sized better for OUR ROADS and comes with a stupid strong motor 2300cc, Bigger than nearly anything worth a shit in Gp2, and even better in turbo form.

And this 240 ''Släggrasern''

'slägg'' is short for ''slägga'' equivalent 'sledge-hammer''

And Släggrasern on asphalt

240s CAN go like stink, excellent balance.
