Oh geez you guys, there's no year cutoff for "recent". It's relative. Drop it.
![]() Has a comet come close to the Earth recently? (100 years) Where have you lived recently? (10 years) What have you eaten recently? (1 day) Does it burn when you've pee'd recently? (2 hours) I would opine that the vast amount of development in "recent" cars has been engine management. Tire rubber is better too, but when it comes to racing, I would guess that a chassis from 20 years ago (stiffened with a proper roll cage like today's prepped cars) with a modern engine and modern rubber would be pretty fricken close. Suspension geometry and gearbox haven't undergone revolutions recently. (Now plenty of old cars had bad suspension design but I think it was for cost, not lack of knowing how, that this was done. But I'm not an old guy so I could be wrong. ![]() Cheers, Anders Grassroots rally. It's what I think about. |

FWD Faster then RWD ... what the f?
Cars sit there as objects to release the potential of the driver, the car FWD, RWD or AWD is nothing in the wrong hands and any drive platform is something magical when driven by the right person. In two wheel drive there appears to be no inherent advantage as to the end the drive wheels sit. That time I kicked my own golf's ass in the street volvo may have been more a function of the black round things from Italy vs the black round things from Malaysia. Remember kids it is sideways into the turn, fairly straight out of them that is fast in all cars. |

Smoochies Derek. Interesting to see that both the recently local clear fastest guys--both coincidentally in good moderate spec Golves and both in Golves more by happenstance than anything else, BOTH get the point that platform itself isn't decisive but that this is: ![]() |

I mourn for future generations....
Timm (you're a knucklehead). Try to keep up here. 20 years ago similar cars being driven with similar prep usually showed RWD to be faster. The biggest factors were likely car choice of the fast guys as much as design characteristics. RWD could accept more abuse and had better balance. Nothing has changed 'recently' except the RWD have died away from lack of production. The frickiggin VW that is somewhat dominant and widely accepted is basically the same late 70s early 80s car as before. The Datsuns, Mazdas, Colts have fallen from favor due to lack of availablity and rust. The Focus is nothing earth shattering it its design. The SRT4 is really the only FWD to bring something somewhat special to the table. All else can be compared pretty easily. If John Lane would pull that spool and put in a locker it would be pretty amazing how much fastewr that car would go. Look at Hurst in that borrowed Capri of Olsons. Fast guy, fast car and easy up front results. If I was doing it today I'd build a Chevette (nod to Wilson) with a Ecotec or a Volvo (yuk, there I said it) with a 4.3 Chev and off to the races. |

The meaning is found in the phrase "Give 'er the full wellie!" Full wellie= a heavy boot on the gas. That's, in this context, the decisive thing, not drive configuration. As I am found of pointing out, Derek and Tom B had/have really quite middle of the power range motors and they defeat cars with vastly more Beee haitch Peace, and double to tripple the all important Ft/lbs. They do that because they give her the full wellie while many in their 'spensive Mitsuburus and Sububitchies never open or hold the gas down (the dyno operator may give it full gas and so they may have some impressive dyno sheet,) but 100% of 150 bhp is better than 1/3 throttle in a whoppie-doo turbo car as has been amply proven stage after stage. |

Well, I've gone to school for 42 years and have 17 degrees in bionanohybridsocioorganoeconomics. Recent is strictly defined as 7 years, 2 months, 23 minutes, 13 seconds from the moment the consonant "t" in recent is completed, but before the air used to utter it has completely passed the vermillion border of the lips. This applies to both roads and adjectives.
And I LIKE Kun's idea. |

and a hydraulic handbrake that only locks up the opposite front right and left rear wheels. that way, when you're flying down a boring old straight away at 101mph and the speccies are almost napping, you can yank that sucker and start doing ken block donuts all the live-long-day. |
