SCCA logbook to CARS
November 20, 2010 01:56AM
How does the whole grandfather clause work?
If I am to buy a car in the US, import to Canada.
Will the cage and everything pass CARS tech?
Logbook was issued in around 2003.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think if you live in Canada it will have to meet CARS specs.

I agree with Gene. The real question is if CARS will accept an older homologated cage at all and if so with an American log book. Remember that a homologated cage cannot be altered in any way. The cage must also be installed as per the manufacturer's instructions by a certified technician.

$13000 for the engine---somebody got fuck up the ying yang royally for the few piddly bhp more than a combination like that of standard parts could do..

That is the cool thing with the Hondas is the power available for cheap when mixing and matching things commonly available.
$13000 is twice what a Cosworth YB fully rebuilt would cost and those are rare 9even if there are 2 downstairs fully rebuilt at the moment:

As to the cage, better ring somebody up there in BC and ask THEM.

You know Tony Latham?
That's a good start, he can tell you whoever the tech-geniuses are now.

How much for this?
Gots any piccies?

I'm sure the car will need a CARS logbook if owned by a Canadian and have to meet whatever CARS spec they require. I'd be surprised if the cage passed muster nowadays, papers or not. I'm even more surprised to see it have an actual SCCA rally logbook, if indeed it does.

Does anyone know about this car? It is a yellow Integra. It last competed in the 2003 Mt. Hood rally.

I have serious doubts about the cage. The seller says that it is a homologated Sparco cage. It's made out of cromoly. The pictures indicate that it is mig welded.

Couple of quick points on this.

1) The car will retain its SCCA logbook but if run by an entrant on a CARS License - and Canadians MUST run on a CARS license in Canada - the car must meet CARS rules.

2) The CARS rulebook is available online - download it and get familiar with it.

3) In the appendix at the back of the rule book (pg. Appendix 1) are the cage rules for cars completed between Jan 1, 2000 and Dec. 31 2008. Homologated cages are acceptable provided they are installed correctly AND have a valid homologation certificate.

The essence of the grandfather clause is that cars need to meet the spec for when construction is completed. So, if you buy a car that had its first log-book issued in 1995 you it would have to meet the specs for pre 2000 cages (page Appendix 6.) Those rules mirror the SCCA rules fairly closely. After 2000 there were some differences which makes SCCA cages really iffy. I know two cars (including a 'free' golf from Seattle) that needed to be re-caged to meet CARS spec.
The trick with a Homologated cage is that it must be installed as required and can't be modified. I know of a car in BC where they added elements to the cage which voided the homologation. I think they were told to by someone at a track they were running at... expensive mistake.

Kieth,

I find it interesting that CARS would not want to issue a new log book. Are you sure about that?

Yes - we see imported cars running on their old logbooks all the time. The book is supposed to be a running history of the car and it should only have one logbook (until its been filled) - why would you actively remove that history or transfer it to a new book.
Also of note, under CARS the logbooks are held until the end of the event an the stewards are the ones to make note of any incidents and/or results so the history is accurate, not a simple event/result list.
(IE it will list DNF Mechanical - gearbox or Off road - light impact mostly cosmetic or Off road - major impact significant damage.)
Under RA(RC) you could centre punch a tree and get away with noting it in your logbook as DNF - coolant leak because the coolant leaked out after the tree obliterated the rad.

CARS does put a permanent sticker on the cage that indicates that it meets the standard it needs to meet. A homologated cage that has a serial number from the manufacturer would still receive a numbered sticker from CARS.

I can't think of why CARS would want to issue their own log book.

We do this in the Atlantic Rally Cup as well, it's pretty straightforward.
